Medium Steak

So tonight we are going to a steak house. I am craving a medium filet mignon! I have seen so many opinions on this, so what are you ladies doing-is medium ok?

Well done is absolutely not an option :)

Re: Medium Steak

  • I'm a rare steak eater myself. The risk with undercooked meat is toxoplasmosis. It's a pretty serious one. I've decided to give up steak all together for the pregnancy because for me, anything beyond medium-rare is not an option. I did have a medium-well burger last week and it was still pretty effing delicious.

  • My Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy says a medium rare steak is okay. It does not recommend lunch meat or raw sushi which I know many September mommas have no problems eating. (These I have avoided). I have eaten steak medium rare and haven't thought twice about it.

I was always told that steaks are okay, but not hamburger.  I think that the logic is that steak is cut and any bacteria that's introduced at that point is limited to the outside of the piece, whereas hamburger is ground and it can be introduced throughout.

  • My dr told me to eat steak well done and I usually order my steaks medium rare. My compromise has been medium. I've actually been eating more steak than usual and have been having it medium with no issues.

  • I still eat it medium rare.  Like @SingleMom31 said, it's the ground meat that's a bigger concern.

  • I think it's fine too!  Especially if you're going to a steak house where they handle and cook meat all the time. I've been eating steak medium rare but I would stay away from medium rare hamburger.

  • My first pg, I didn't eat steak. What's the point if you have to cook it so much? This pregnancy- med rare all the way. As long as it's fresh, you are most likely good to go.

  • I gave up most red meat and steaks years ago just because it made me feel horrible when I ate it.  The first few weeks of my pregnancy I wanted steak so bad so I of course ate it.  I didn't know about this rule so I was eating my filet's medium rare.  I think as long as you know it is a fresh, good piece of meat you would be fine.  I would eat it MR again.
  • I feel like eating steak medium is probably fine, especially from a good restaurant.  I normally eat my steak medium on the rare side, but can't let myself do it while pregnant - I will only eat it well done.  I also stay away from cold cuts and raw sushi though!

I had a medium steak from Shula's last week, still drooling over the thought of it!

I'm a rare steak eater, I actually prefer steak tartare, but I can lay off of that for now. I still eat my steaks rare, I just bitch less if they're slightly overcooked. As long as the outside is cooked, it's fine. The muscle tissue of cows (and other red meat animals) is dense enough that pathogens don't get into it. As long as the animal is healthy, so is the muscle tissue. If it's ground meat, then it needs to be cooked.
  • I eat medium all the time!  I make sure to get grass fed beef and try to buy local.  Although, I have to admit....not always possible.  I agree with everyone saying it is probably more worrisome with ground beef.  Enjoy your steak!!!!!
