Is 4 months too late to be checked for tongue tie?

I'm mostly pumping for my twins (like 95% of the time). I do nurse them occasionally. One of them is a great nurser where the other pops off often and makes a smacking sound like she can't get latched. She does this on her bottles as well. They have their 4 month appointment next week and I was going to ask the doctor is she has a tongue tie. Does this sound like a tongue tie issue? If it is, is she too old to have it corrected?

Thanks!

  • They should be able to still correct it I'd have them take a look !

  • It can definitely still be corrected, although it might need to be done with a laser at that point (still really easy and fast!). I would ask about it for sure, although a lot of pedis are not experienced with recognizing certain forms of tongue tie (like posterior tongue ties). Maybe also get an opinion from an IBCLC?

  • My IBCLC told me that even she couldn't give a definitive diagnosis and she referred me to an ENT, so if you know an ENT or can get a referral then go that route. Some dentists can also diagnose a tongue tie and take steps to correct it.
