How do I improve my car's smell?

My car has a musty-driven-on-dirt smell, and no matter how much I clean it, the scent will not improve. I don't really want a synthetic smelling car refresher, because they make me gag. How do you keep your vehicle smelling clean?

  • Seriously buy one of those air fresheners that clips on to your vent.

  • I've heard of people putting dryer sheets under the car mats or hiding them in the console.  If you have a dryer sheet scent that doesn't bother you, that is.

  • A good cleaning like shampooing the seats and floors can make a difference. And then using something fresh like a Yankee Good Air freshener or container of beads would keep it nice. The Good Air just smells clean IMO, not nauseating. And keep a plastic bag for trash and empty it every day to keep it uncluttered. I know this because my car is my dirty little secret, and with our new vehicle, I have vowed to keep it from getting gross.

  • leave an open container of cheap coffee open when the car is parked.  that has successfully neutralized nasty vomit smells in a rental car for me-uhhhhhhh, a friend.
