Pacifier, Booster seats and other bigger toddler question

When does a child need a booster seat? I know dd isn't ready, but I have no idea when she will need one.

Also, around what age would you start a child in piano lessons?

And for pacifiers...  DS has never been super attached.  He only uses it to fall asleep sometimes.  I was going to get rid of it a while ago, but didn't.  Lately, he somehow keeps finding them.  I constantly find him walking around with it.   I suspect dd is the culprit.   Anyways, I fear he is now getting attached and want to get rid of it.  Any advice?   Dd stopped using one on her own when she was just a few months old, so this is new to me.

My peditrician said for pacis,.. start worrying around 18 months to 2 years. He suggested cutting a little bit off of the tip (that's what she said, haha) every couple of days and eventually, it will become undesirable.
This is what a co-worker did to get her son off of pacis. It worked really well.

Sorry, didn't think about that. For the car. She sits at the table with no seat now.

I'm really impressed your kid will sit at a table. In, like, an adult chair? I'm not being sarcastic. My twins are so far away from being ready for that.

As far as car booster seats go, not until your child outgrows the car seat, and definitely not before age four.

My 3 year old did, not Ds. He doesn't even have interest in a spoon yet. I say that like dd doesn't use her fingers most of the time.....

And thanks. I figured dd still had a bit. We only turned her to forward facing a few months ago.

  • Eta, I ask because she needs a seat for dhs truck. I am back and forth about going with a cheaper version, since she never rides with him, but if she needs to be in it for a while still, I may go with the better seat.
  • My five year old just had his well check. Our pediatrician says they can use a booster once they are four years old and 40 lbs. the car seat my son is in will last him until he's 70 lbs though and I plan on keeping him in it for as long as I can :)

  • I started piano lessons when I was five.  I'd taken music lesson (the Kodaly method, which teaches young children the basics of music and theory) so by that time I was reading music.  I remember BEGGING my mom to let me take lessons, since my older siblings played the piano.  I promised to practise every day.  that did not happen, but I loved playing regardless.

  • I started violin lessons at six, my brother was five, and years later, my little sister started at two. She didn't stick with it though. How pools you start kids in music depends on what method you wasn't too use. Suzuki music is actually designed to begin before the baby is born. :)

  • Booster seat - when they are four and 40 pounds and have outgrown their convertible seat.  My 5 and 6 year old boys are still in their five-point harnesses, simply because they haven't outgrown the seats yet.  My 6 yo just broke 40 pounds a few months ago, so we may move him to the booster with a back when the weather turns nice and I have a chance to clean the car out/rearrange all of the seats.

Music lessons - my oldest started violin when he was 5.5.  He's doing well with it, but I almost wish we would have waited another year or so.  Getting him to practice is a pain right now, because he'd rather play.  DS2 just asked if he could play the guitar as his instrument and secretly I was happy simply because I know that's an instrument you need to be a little older to play.  We probably won't start with him until he's 7.  My sister put her daughter in piano when she turned 7, too.

My oldest is the only one who used a pacifier a lot.  We took it away cold turkey at 13 months when he got his first tooth (he was a late teether).  There was a week of fussiness and then he was over it.  DD1 also used a paci, but only for naps and bedtime.  She eventually lost interest at 2.5 or so.  No fight to give them up.
