S/O Therapy

How do you go about getting a therapist? It seems like there's a lot of ladies here who go to counseling, and after months of internal debate, I finally decided to make an appointment.
I first went to my insurance site to see the list of providers and after not having any luck, googled counseling, therapy, and marriage and family counseling and I literally dialed right down the list of names and all of the numbers were deactivated. I finally got a working number (only 1!) and left them a message and haven't heard back. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to see my PCP first to get a referral? I don't know anyone who has ever gone to counseling so I don't even know where to start.
Also, how did you know who to go with? Did you go to a few appointments with a few different counselors and decide who was the best fit?

Re: S/O Therapy

  • When did you leave a message? It can take a day or two for them to get back to you.
Actually it was only this afternoon. I figured it would be like any other doctors office and they would call back the same day. I guess I'm a bit impatient  :\">

  • My therapist was through the employee assistance program at work, although he is also a participating provider in my PPO plan.  I did verrrrry briefly see a therapist before him who was recommended by my PCP, but after like 2 appointments, I basically got stood up.  I waited at the office for literally a half hour after I was supposed to have my appointment, and she never showed, so I never went back, and then when my anxiety got really bad a few months, I decided to call the number on the employee assistance program flyers.  Just dumb luck that he and I clicked well and he was able to help me.

What kind of insurance plan do you have?  If you have a PPO, you shouldn't need a referral.  And when you say you had no luck searching your insurance website, do you mean you searched psychologists within a particular radius and got no results at all?

  • I have a PPO, and now that you mentioned it, I think my work does have an employee assistance program that has a certain number of free counseling sessions. The company I work for was bought by a larger company recently, so I'm not sure of all the changes yet.
When I looked at my insurance website it gave me a list of about 20 counselors where some only listed an address and when I googled the others, the numbers were disconnected.

  • I found my therapist through the practice. There is a local school for integrative therapy and they have a practice. I was interested in the techniques.

There are all kinds of techniques for therapy, if you have a preference you can start there. Referrals from people you know or from another care provider are also good (that's how I found my 3rd therapist).

I think that calling your insurance provider and talking to them about their outdated list is in order!

  • Call you insurance agency's customer service line and ask them to help you get an accurate, working list.
