Anyone else getting P 17 shots?

Mp perinatologist wants me to start these in a few weeks and I haven't decided if it's something I want to do. My babies were both six weeks early, but the first was due to my water breaking and the second time I was induced because of my blood pressure. I was having contractions, but we'll never know if they would have led to labor or not. I'm just not sure I'm a good candidate and the doctor seemed a little pushy about it. Anyone else have this recommended to them?

Re: Anyone else getting P 17 shots?

  • I had PTL last time and my Dr. has discussed these as well. We are going to see how the next month goes and go from there. Could you get a second opinion?

  • I was on bed rest for 6 weeks and had my daughter 3 weeks early, so my doctor is having me get the shot this time around starting at 12-13 weeks

  • I'm getting them starting at 16 weeks. The risks are minimal and to me the idea of a pre term baby earlier than my DD is scary to me so I'll do what I can to prevent it.

  • I am. I start at 16 weeks. I had zero complications with my twins before my water broke at 29 weeks. There isn't much that says it should help my situation as there isn't much research but I'm 100% for giving it a shot.

suitern - I'm going to go over it with my primary ob next week. I would start at 16 weeks so I have a couple more weeks to decide.

I'm sure I'll end up doing it, I just hate the idea of introducing hormone therapy if I don't even qualify as someone who would benefit. The doctor even stated, "I'm not convinced you're a good candidate, but I'd like to try it anyway." What do I even do with that? Funny thing is this was one of the most benign topics we discussed as this pregnancy has a slew of issues, but it's the thing I've chosen to dwell on.

I know it must seem silly to question if it even has the slightest potential to prevent my baby from coming early. Thanks for responding!

  • The MFM mentioned them as a possibility for me this time as well.  We're going to reassess at my 16 week appt, he said if I start them then I'll be starting them then.  DD was born at 32 weeks after my water broke out of the blue, so we're still trying to figure out what the best options might be to prevent a recurrence.

  • I did 17 p shots for 15 weeks  once my cervix shortened and started funneling down to my cerclage and I credit them with saving my pregnancy..... I had no side effects and the shots weren't painful. The steroids were more of a pain...

  • I agree, the P17 shots, don't sound great to have every week, but so much better than having a preemie.  Plus, those steroid shots SUCKED and were so painful.

I find it interesting that there are so many of us who had PTL, bed rest, and early babies previously. I hope we can all make it to full term this time!

  • My goal is to make it to September 1!!! I REALLY hope I can get there and that previous PTL was a freak accident.

Will you be going in to your doctor weekly? Or are you self administering?
  • @texastwinmom I'm having them done at the OB office. Its only 10 minutes away and I'm a SAHM with a flexible schedule. I just need to see a nurse so I don't need to wait for the dr or anything. They said I could just walk in, no appointment needed so whenever DD and I get out of the house we'll go.

Me too! I told my husband and my doctors that I want this to be my big, fat baby that is at least six pounds and born in the same month s/he is due. They all laughed at me. One can hope!

I didn't even know you could self administer. Clearly I didn't ask enough questions.

  • Yikes, I sure hope I don't have to self administer.  I could not do it.  I'm doing them, but my stupid insurance made a big deal out of paying for them. They are.  If they're like this with preemie care, I sure hope the shots work because preemies plus stingy insurance do not mix.

  • Just got my first shot today. Still fighting insurance but Makena is sending a free vial so I'm at least covered for next 5 weeks. So far just sore at site but I have time for side effects to appear, obviously.
