I bought mine at JoAnn's but can't remember what brand it was. There were not many to choose from. You want 100% wool, and thicker is better from what I read. I used pieces of an old wool sweater for the core and and wrapped the outside with wool roving from Hobby Lobby. The roving was something like this, but I got mine a lot cheaper b/c it was on clearance.
Don't use super wash wool, it won't felt enough to hold together. I also just used yarn I had around from when I was knitting more often. Cascade 220 is pretty cheap. I had a huge amount of red that I avoided because I'm not sure how colorfast it would be.
I've been putting off buying wool for my dryer balls. This thread inspired me to run a search for roving in the UK and I found a site that sells it by type of sheep! Now I'm overwhelmed.

That's kind of what I found. I emailed her and told her what I needed it for and she suggested a type. I bought a crap ton of it and it was reasonably priced. Otherwise it's crazy expensive for small amounts.
What did she suggest? Worst case I'll have some leftover that I can play with. I'm been meaning to teach myself how to spin.
