S/O UO - Tylenol

Has anyone had any side effects after giving LO Tylenol? We've given DD Tylenol two out of the last four nights for teething, and I feel like it makes her hyper alert and even harder to put to sleep. Last night, after giving her Tylenol, she was up every hour, and needed at least 20 mins of rocking to fall back asleep. I don't know if she was super alert and fussy because we gave her Tylenol or if we gave her Tylenol because she was super alert and fussy.

Our pedi's nurse just said to hold off on giving Tylenol for a few days. This is me today I-)

  • Hmm, weird! I definitely don't notice that. If I am going to need to give it to him, I can tell by the time we get ready for bathtime because he gets in this frantic, desperate crying mode. I give him the tylenol, give him the bath, get his room all ready and by the time we're ready for the final nursing of the night, he transforms into happy, mellow, sleepy baby. You can visibly see him relaxing as it kicks in. Is she old enough to try Ibuprofen instead?

I just gave him some Tylenol 20 minutes ago, after he was screaming non-stop for an hour, and now he's out like a light. So interesting how every baby is so different than the next!

She's 5 and 1/2 months, so not quite ready for ibuprofen. Her bedtime routine and time were pretty much the same as usual, but she did take her third nap kind of late and I ended up having to wake her from it. Maybe it has nothing to do with Tylenol? It just seems strange because I've noticed it on other nights when we've given her Tylenol. I've heard of this type of reaction to Benadryl in infants, but not Tylenol.

  • Tylenol usually makes babies sleepy, but every child is different.

I've never noticed any unwelcome side effects of Tylenol, but for some reason he doesn't seem to want to take it. I'm lucky if I can get him to swallow half of the dose. He felt so lousy after his 6 month shots and gets so miserable sometimes with teething that I wish I could explain to him that he might feel better if he took it!
Have you tried different flavors?  DS will spit the grape flavor back at you but he sucks the cherry down like candy.

  • just a theory that i came up with because my dd1 was the same way- my dd1 is very active and alert, and i think when the tylenol kicked in and she felt better, she went back to being her hyper self. my dd1 hates sleep anyway, so it's always a struggle to get her to sleep.

Yes! I'm embarrassed to admit it, but most days DD naps in her car seat/stroller. Pulling the canopies closed and blocking out all stimulation is the only way to get her to nap. I rock it for about 15 mins, then she'll stay asleep for maybe 90 mins. This is after I try the crib for 30-45 mins. Usually she does ok at bedtime though, so I don't know what is going on.

So do you just skip Tylenol altogether or has she outgrown it? TIA
