1st Trimester

lost a few pound in the first few weeks...

Hi everyone,
I'm pregnant with my first, and I'm six weeks a long. Normally I exercise and "try" to eat healthy, but that's never quite where I've wanted it to be. Since I found out I'm pregnant, I have been taking care to eat healthy, and making myself do my normal exercise routines (no excuses allowed anymore, lol), but going about 70% intensity. I have slight morning sickness, with no vomiting. I started at 139 lbs (2 lbs away from "overweight" for my height, I'm 5'3"), and since I've been eating healthy (way less sweets!), had nausea, and eat smaller meals because my digestion is crazy, I've gone down to 136. I know that's not a lot of weight loss, and I'm not trying to lose. It just happened. Do you guys think I should be trying to put the pounds back on or just let my body do what it does? Obviously I'll ask my doctor, but I wanted to get your opinions. thanks :)

  • You're never suppose to lose weight while pregnant it can be dangerous. However eating sensibly: dark green leafy veggies, bright color fruits & veg, salmon, avocado, nuts...etc is always a GREAT idea. I think as long as you maintain the workout you started before you were pregnant you are safe, I think there are safety guidelines for your heart rate while you work out when youre pregnant. Might want to look that up & get a watch heart rate monitor. Check with your doctor, they'll know best :) Best of luck!

  • It's definitely not uncommon to lose weight within the first trimester due to sickness. Just talk with your doctor and try to find things that can keep the sickness to a minimum, if you can. There is all kinds of remedies and posts on here about morning sickness just search it in the search bar.

Also, don't push yourself on the workouts. Stick to what you were doing beforehand.

  • Before I clicked, i assumed the weight loss would be from ms (which is totally normal in 1st tri). But it sounds like finding out you are pregnant is excellent motivation for you to commit to a healthy diet. Good job! It will get harder as you continue through your pregnancy - you will most likely have days where your stomach is a bottomless pit and you will probably have mad cravings.

For first trimester, you don't really have to consume any extra calories. It sounds like you are maybe consuming fewer since you cut out some junk. Maybe have an extra snack, such as a banana or English muffin with peanut butter. Beginning in 2nd tri, you should aim for and extra 300 calories per day, which is just another snack or 2.

If there are days where you aren't able to get in all your calories, it's ok. A lot of women have very little appetites or can't keep things down due to ms. As long as you aren't in a severe calorie deficit, your body is really good at giving the baby the nutrition it needs from your diet.

I choose to count my calories with My Fitness Pal. I have struggled with weight in the past and don't always trust my 'I'm hungry' cues. I have lost 40 pounds over the past couple of years and am afraid of gaining it all back with this pregnancy.

  • I mean, a 3 pound fluctuation in the first 6 weeks of pregnancy sounds totally normal to me.  Your baby is the size of a pea right now.  Lots of ladies gain almost nothing the first tri (not me, unfortunately-LOL).

Let your body do what it's going to do.

  • During my first pregnancy, I didn't actively TRY to lose weight.  But I ended up losing 14lbs in the first 6 months. I wasn't overweight, I ate everything in sight, and I didn't have that much morning sickness.  My dr never seemed worried because the baby always looked healthy. But between 6 months & giving birth at 38 weeks, I gained 30 lbs. My belly was MASSIVE! In the days after E was born, I never had a post pregnancy belly.

So my advice...don't worry unless dr is worried :)

Please don't try to scare her.  This is a ridiculos thing to say.

This exactly! Don't try and scare her.
I always lose weight with my pregnancies at first and have never had an issue and the drs have never had an issue either.

  • Like everyone else is saying, it's pretty normal to lose some weight during the first trimester especially if you have m/s. Obviously this will vary on how much is lost with everybody. During my first pregnancy I was one of those "oh so lucky ones" that had very severe m/s ( or what I like to call all day sickness). I didn't weigh a lot to begin with and lost 7lb. And despite what some people say or believe, you don't need to double the amount you eat. I'm sure you have heard many talk about how they have to since they are eating for 2 now. However, whether you eat more or not the baby gets the proper nutrition needed by taking from you.

This. I lost 5 pounds in first tri and my doc was not concerned in the slightest. Many, many, many women lose weight in the first tri. Don't scare her and others going through the same thing with completely false statements.

Op- just try and eat healthy foods and exercise if you can (I know it's hard in first tri to exercise for many people), and you will be fine.

  • I have a friend who lost 20lbs after she found out she was pregnant b/c she started eating SO HEALTHY for the baby.  She also had some morning sickness.  He was born healthy and fine.  No worries!
  • Thanks for your input, everyone!
  • Yes, women can experience weight loss OR gain in the first few weeks of pregnancy.  I myself have dropped almost 8 pounds due to all-day sickness.  The baby is so small this early in the pregnancy, that it's nutritional needs are much more easily met now than later when he/she really starts growing, and by then, your appetite should be back.  The main thing is to stay hydrated and keep taking your vitamins.
  • I lost about 10 lbs during my first tri with this pregnancy. I had some morning sickness, but really only threw up maybe 3 times. I had no appetite and whenever I did try to eat, I'd take like 3 bites and feel so nauseous I had to stop eating. I told my OB about it and he wasn't concerned as long as I was trying to eat. I know that's not really your case but what I'm trying to get at is its perfectly okay to lose weight during the first tri as long as you're not purposefully doing it. Especially if you're eating healthy and getting the right amount of calories in, you should be fine. I'd talk to your OB about it just so they're aware.
