BLW Question

Hunter had been showing a ton of interest lately in food and is able to sit up unassisted so we decided to give him sweet potato spears on Saturday. After his first bite, he spits almost all of it out and won't try any more. Which is fine, it's obviously a process, no biggie.

Then on Monday we tried more sweet potato and this time he wouldn't even take a bite, he put it into his mouth and then made a "yuck" face and pushed it away.

Today I was eating a banana for breakfast and broke him off a piece to see if he wanted some since he was watching me so intently. He grabbed it shoved it into his mouth then pushed it away and wouldn't try it again.

Does this mean he's just not ready for food yet? I'm certainly not pushing it on him and am fine if he's not ready, but do you think that's what's going on?

I just see all of these babies chowing down on food and loving it and am curious!

Re: BLW Question

  • It may be that it's just a new and strange sensation for him.  He's not really used to putting things in his mouth that actually taste like something.  Everything I've read about BLW basically emphasizes that repetition is necessary, and just because a baby rejects a food the first time, doesnt mean he doesn't like it.  Sometimes it can take 10 times before they're like OMG, I LURVE sweet potato.  Just keep trying.  It doesn't really matter if he eats anything, as long as he continues to explore.

  • We just started, too. While my baby LOVES sweet potatoes and shoves the spears in his mouth at a pace too fast for my comfort, he thrashes at me when I try to give him avocado, pushes it away and refuses it.

  • Maybe try mum mum crackers. They dissolve slowly and are pretty bland, so a good start to food. They can hold and feed them to themselves, so they learn that portion.

This is really helpful, thanks! I haven't really read up much on it because I'm kind of a go with the flow type of person, so this makes me feel better! I'm doing BLW because I'm kind of lazy :) I was pretty sure it was normal behavior, I just didn't want him to freak out over me offering him food continuously. I think I'll just take his lead and continue to offer things so he can explore.

Yeah, just let him play with the food for now. He'll eventually want to taste. I have the opposite problem, dd loooves solids and takes huge bites. It makes me nervous as hell, even though I know the book says it's normal. She'll gag and cough a little but if you take her food away....oh man she gets pissed. I've tried mashing it up a little and giving it her on a spoon, nope, she wants to do it herself. She started swiping food from our plates so I offered her a sweet potato spear and was shocked how she devoured it and looked for more.
This is us.  He gets really upset at meal time.  Seriously for no reason.  I don't even take his food away he just melts down every time.  He liked the avocado the best but gagged so much on it and threw up a little.  I thought it would be different but I can tell it just takes practice and patience.
