Late Term and Child Loss

fuming right now

We just received a bill from the hospital (NOT where my D&C was done) for $1500!  It's for the genetic testing that they did on Riley, of which we STILL do not have the results.  The doctor NEVER asked us if we wanted testing done, TOLD us that they were going to do it, NEVER told us what the cost would be or if any of it was covered by our insurance.  We know what happened... this testing was just to verify that.  If we had known the cost we NEVER would have had it done!  I almost feel like we were tricked into it.  I'm so angry about this!  How can they tell us they're going to do something, not give us an option, and then charge us for it?!

  • Wow! I'm so sorry. This is really terrible - do you have any sort of recourse? I'm not familiar with healthcare systems outside of our own, but I feel like that's ridiculous.

  • ooooohhh my goodness.  I would be so mad too!  I actually got several bills in the mail regarding Conner and Ben (one of which was for their placenta pathology results).  My insurance company had assigned someone to the boys' case, but they didn't tell us that until last week (so, over 2 months after the boys had been born/passed).  I talked to the insurance person and she actually took care of the bills for us.  It turned out to be messy handling of the bills.  Can you try to call your insurance company and see why the testing wasn't covered?  Maybe it was covered but something got lost in translation, like with us.  I also called our hospital for a couple of other bills, fuming over them (they were bills for the newborn nursery.  Are they kidding me?).  Anyway, I got so mad over the phone that they put the bills on hold for further review.  Definitely make phone calls and see what you can do.  You shouldn't have to pay that bill, that is - just like @lyndseyts said - ridiculous.
  • Insurance is so frustrating!  I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this.  MH and I both had a bunch of genetic testing done after our loss and we just got a bill saying MHs insurance denied all of it.  He called, and liked ikrystal said, was able to figure it out.  It's definitely worth making a phone call.  Again, I'm so sorry.  It was really hard getting all the bills after our loss, so hard to pay all that money for nothing (not really nothing, obviously, but definitely not what we had thought we would be paying for).  ((hugs))

I'm so sorry you are going through this.  We got a few bills from the hospital, addressed to my daughter, after she passed away that I didn't understand.  I called the hospital billing department and they apologized profusely and took care of everything for me.  I hope things work out for you without too much pain on your part.

  • Thanks. Dh is going to call and argue the bill. I expected some cost for the testing, but that's ridiculous!

  • Try calling the hospital that is billing you. I keep getting bills from the hospital for Brayden that are being denied, all because they're billing the insurance under MY name, not his. I have to call for each and every separate bill- they can't seem to just correct it across the board and stop sending bills. So sorry you have to go through such a ridiculous hassle right now.

I am so sorry they are putting you through this added stress.  I really hate the fact that after experiencing such a loss that any of us have to pay a bill.  I hop you are able to contest the bill with either the hospital or your insurance.  (((Big Hugs)))

  • Dh called today. The clinic never forwarded our insurance information. They're going to run it through and send us an accurate statement. I just want it taken care of so that I can move beyond this part.

  • Ugh... glad they are running it through the insurance now. I'm still paying my daughter's bill. It was about 2,000 (after insurance). Painful reminder.

  • I am so so sorry you are having to deal with this right now- hospital bills are definitely one more example of salt in the wound :(

FWIW, my OB told us to contact them if we got any bills related to testing and they would argue on our behalf.  If your insurance comes back and still denies the testing, maybe that would be an option for you.

I hope everything works out smoothly in this regard, and I am hoping for healing and comfort as you navigate these waters.  <3
