Suppressing breast milk

I did not see a thread on this so hopefully I didn't miss it! Anyone have any tips / tricks that worked quickly for suppressing milk? I did not feel like anything was going to happen, 3 days later and BAM my breasts are ginormous! Cabbage leaves, ice, and sage tea is what I'm working with so far anything else that helps move it along that has worked?? Thank you!!

Re: Suppressing breast milk

  • Wear a tight sports bra or two 24/7 for awhile, avoid hot water hitting your breasts in the shower, don't express any milk unless you just can't handle the engorgement pain, and I believe Benadryl also helps dry up milk. The cabbage leaves help too.

  • Wear a tight bra so literally nothing is stimulating your nipples. Avoid hot water on them in the ahower. try not to express any at all! Mine took about two weeks after attempting to breast feed for 3 days. I'd assume the longer you breast fed the longer it takes. I didn't use cabbage but I heard that's a lifesaver!
  • Wear a tight sports bra (or two), with a compression tank top (or just a really tight tank will do), then a shirt over that. Put ice on them, don't touch them AT ALL, and avoid hot water on them in the shower. If they're still bad, take some Sudafed or Benadryl.

  • I agree with the pp, sports bra, then a tight cammi or tank, then shirt, no expressing, I wear multiple breast pads to keep them from getting bumped, and really to keep them from leaking out, Advil is very helpful as an anti inflammatory, and keep away from hot water! Mine took 7-10 days with my previous pg, I'm on day two this time, so far so good!

  • Thank you ladies! I'm Gonna try a lil more support and wear a tight cami with my sports bra, I read mixed things about how tight to keep them and wasn't sure. I'm not Breastfeeding at all so hopefully they will go down quick!

I didn't wear anything tight; was told that can cause clogged ducts and mastitis. And it was uncomfortable!

I wonder if it's different if you have been nursing (pumping) and are stopping vs trying to stop it from the start? After I lost Alice I was given a chest binder in the hospital to try and prevent my milk from coming in and to discourage it from continuing to come if it did come in. The binder definitely wasn't the comfiest thing I ever wore that's for sure.
