Trying to figure it out

FTM here debating on if we should go ahead and buy a convertible car seat. DS still fits in his carrier it's not like he's too long so I would hate to go ahead and switch when he can still use it. He is 6 months old now but I have noticed the last few days that he is trying to sit up while in it. We are planning to go on a trip in the next month or so and just curious if I should get one before then so he has time to adjust or just wait till after.

WWYD? We have the extra money now thanks to taxes but I don't want to get it and it just sit around for a while.

Re: Trying to figure it out

  • I'm a bargain hunter.  If I don't need it now I won't buy it unless there is a great deal.  Someone posted yesterday that there are some coupons that lead to great savings.  If I found something really discounted, I'd splurge for it now.  Otherwise, I'd wait.

I had to use a convertible car seat when my husband accidentally took our base with him to work one day, and dd did fine in it.  I don't think there is an adjustment period.

  • I'm trying to figure it out too.  My girls still fit ok, their feet are right at the edge though.  My brother advised me to stay with the infant seats as long as possible because it was so much easier - you don't have to buckle and unbuckle them every time you get in and out of the car, you can just lift the seats out. My girls sleep in the car, so this is nice because I can take them out without waking them. But those infant seats are just so freakin' heavy, I have to practically throw them into the car now to get them in because I can't lift them so high. I generally don't have to carry both at once, luckily - I take them into the house 1 at a time and have a stroller that I can just drop the seats into when I'm out.  So, if I get the convertible seats, I'll need to get a new double stroller too because those seats stay in the car and I can't carry both babies.

aaaaahhh - too much for my sleep deprived brain to think about!!!

  • @ballygirl  after using the convertible seat for that one time experience, I was kind of hooked!  I, too, kept thinking that its so much better to be able to snap them into the carriage with their car seat, but buckling them into their convertible seat is SO. MUCH. EASIER.  I think it has something to do with the car seat being much deeper than the convertible seat (like a bucket seat).  I have actually been able to unbuckle dd while she's sleeping and put her in her carriage without her waking up. The car seat has gotten so heavy!

  • We're in the same boat - I've already picked out the seat I want, but am waiting to find the right sale like @deedee1017 said. #bargainhunterforlyfe
    It is getting heavy though!

We just bought a convertible car seat this week. DS is already 20 lbs and doesn't look too comfy anymore in his carrier car seat; not to mention the fact I nearly break my back everytime I carry it. BabysRus had a sale this week on Graco carseats, so I went ahead and made the purchase. I haven't put him in it, but it looks like he will be a lot more comfy!

That's good to know that its not so difficult getting them buckled in.  Its a real PITA with the infant seats!

I saw the discounted price but not the savings. Is it an amazing deal?

We're waiting since we don't need it now, car seats expire, and we're moving so the longer we can hold out the better. If you can pass on this deal set the money aside for when you need it.

The chicco nextfit was at target for 279.99 and we got it for 151. That's a good deal in my opinion! About the car seats expiring.. We bought our travel system in July and it still had a manufacture date of October 2012 so it had been sitting on the shelf for awhile. I haven't opened our convertible yet but I'm sure it's the same situation. We aren't going to be using it for a few months though.

I totally understand wanting to wait because you are moving though. It'll be just one more thing (big thing!) to move.

  • Our Graco infant seat is older and the max weight is 22 lb. DS is right around there more do I'm going to have to move him. I was waiting as long as I could because to come it of the infant seat because I needed him to be able to sit in a cart and a restaurant high chair. Also it is easier to keep them warm and covered in the infant seat, so I've been hoping the weather would improve. I don't mind the convertible once we're passed these issues. Sleeping is the only other thing, but DD still falls asleep in the car all the time and we just carry her in, so I'm not too worried about that either. It is a lot easier to carry just a baby vs that heavy seat.

  • Wow I can't believe our LO's are old enough to even think about this, crazy! My LO is a tiny shrimp, 13 lbs so I guess I have quite a while but I'm both dreading not being able to just pop the car seat out of the car with babe asleep but can't wait to not have to lug it in and out of the house. Hope you find a good one for your trip!

  • For me I am using my Infant car seat like its a convertible. It's just too heavy for me to carry her around any longer. We can wait a little while yet, but she cries when I put her in the infant so I may switch just for comfort.

  • My son is really long, so I know he will outgrow his carrier before he reaches the weight limit. I wasn't planning on buying a convertible until I needed it, but the sale on the Nextfit was too good to pass up. I knew I would be buying one within the next 2 months, so I'm not worried about an expiration date. From what I read, they're too big for their seat/carrier if their heads are an inch from the top. He's 5 months and his straps are already on the setting just below the top slot. Won't be long until we transition!
