1st Trimester

Diet to reduce likelihood of GD

Yesterday I had my first appointment with an OB nurse. She said that since I have hypothyroid I am at a slightly higher risk of developing GD. She recommended limiting my carbs to reduce the likelihood of the happening. I love my carbs and with this 1st tri nausea, carb rich foods are among the few foods that sound appetizing.

I really wish I would have asked the nurse more questions about reducing carbs. There was so much information being discussed and I feel that this point wasn't talked about in enough depth.

So for you that are at risk for GD or have experienced it with prior pregnancy: what snacks do you suggest for me to keep in my desk at work? Any good resources I should read?

Re: Diet to reduce likelihood of GD

  • I have hypothyroid and I've never been told I'm at a higher risk for GD. I didn't have it with my other 2 pregnancies either. I'm also on a very high dosage of synthroid. I, personally, wouldn't start dieting or restricting until you get more specific info.

  • no diet will reduce the risk if GD. It is caused by the placenta, not you.
A low Carb diet may reduce the side effects of GD but can't 'prevent it'.

    This 100%. :-bd

  • I keep some raw almonds or pistachios at my desk for snacking. I also like dry roasted edamame - high on protein. Dried apricots are higher on the carbs (as far as low-carb snacks go) but also very good for you and easy to store at your desk. I keep popcorn at my desk and throw it in a paper lunch bag and toss it in the microwave - no butter or chemicals...just plain popcorn. I've got a refrigerator close by so I bring small apples and string cheese, too.

  • Thanks everyone for the advice. I will definitely be having a more I depth conversation with my doctor at my next appointment. Until then I plan to follow the nurses advice and try to avoid a carb heavy diet. I certainly won't be low carb, but balanced. Before getting my BFP I was focused on losing weight and was eating a protein rich diet since it is so much more filling, so it won't be much of a diet change for me.

@theresat858‌ - I am under the care of an endocrinologist and have had my thyroid levels closely monitored throughout the duration of my pregnancy. I know how important it is.
