milk amount for 10mo old

edited March 2014 in Breastfeeding
LO will be 10 months next week. She is still ebf and eating purees and some finger foods.

She is taking 3 4oz bottles while at daycare and nursing in the morning and at night. At what age do babies start cutting back bottles and eating more solids?

  • agree with PP to follow your LOs lead- is she finishing all those bottles every day? another thing to consider is your supply-- how much are you pumping? you may not be able to continue to pump enough to make up the 3 bottles. at which point you could send more solid food as a substitute for one of the bottles.

  • The majority of your child's nutrition should come from breast milk (or formula) for the first year.  After that follow her lead.

DS is 18 months and still nurses, though not nearly as much.  Some days he eats a ton of solids (we never did purees, personal choice) and other days not so much.  While I am starting to look forward to him completely weaning it does give me some piece of mind on those days he doesn't eat as well.

The past couple of months my supply has beeb slowly decreasing. I used to easily get the 12 oz to send but now I am getting closer to 10-11. I supplement from my freezer stash. This was why I was wondering if she needed less milk. She normally eats 2-3 oz puree at daycare twice. And finger foods with us for dinner.

  • My pumping output started decreasing around 9 months and at the same time she started leaving some of her last bottle. She now takes all 3 of her solids meals at daycare and 2 4 oz bottles. She nurses in the morning, sometimes evening, bedtime and sometimes motn.

yeah, your pumping output will gradually decrease as your LO is eating more solids, as PP said. you could try sending 2 4 or 4 1/2 ounce bottles, solids, and a straw cup with water to replace the other bottle.

We've tried a straw cup but not quite getting it yet so not doing any water yet. She can actually do ok out of a regular cup.
