Standard precedure to induce at 37 weeks if baby is measuring under 10th percentile?

This seems counter intuitive to me. I'm small framed and was only 4.11 lb full term when I was born. My son was 6.6lb full term. This girl is measuring in the 4th percentile but there are no problems with the plecenta or anything else. So far she is just little. My husband and I are pretty sure our dates are off. I'm scared she might be so tiny and under developed if they induce at 37 weeks. Advice?

Re: Standard precedure to induce at 37 weeks if baby is measuring under 10th percentile?

  • I saw a resident at my appt today and she is the one who discussed this with me.

  • I only had one cycle between pregnancies and measured 5 days behind my due date at the first us.
  • You should review the risks and benefits of this approach with your doctor to make sure you are comfortable with whatever treatment plan. There are many reasons why this is standard procedure and while you do have the right to refuse an induction, it should be a well-informed decision. Share with them your concerns about your baby not being adequately developed as well as concern over dates and hopefully they can give you some more answers/ information.

Out of curiosity, how far off do you think your dates are and why?

    How early was that ultrasound?

  • We thing our dates are off by 5 days. Not a whole lot but it would make me 29 weeks instead of 30.

Generally speaking they will not change your due date unless you measure a week or more different in either direction. How early did you have that ultrasound done?

I would suspect your dates are pretty accurate then. 1st trimester ultrasound measures crown to rump length to calculate gestational age and is accepted as being the most reliable method of dating a pregnancy. Also consider that even if you were charting your BBT thats only accurate +/- 2 days.

  • Were you diagnosed with IUGR? I don't understand why a doctor would want you to deliver two weeks prior to full term unless it was emergent?

  • There's some information here that might get you started (IUGR is mentioned):  https://www.childbirthconnection.org/article.asp?ck=10652&ClickedLink=1072&area=27  This is research based and links to relevant studies so it would give you a better understanding and material to discuss with your doctors.

    Ultimately it is your decision!!
  • Oh and I also think it's legit to be concerned about thinking you are 5 days behind what's listed in your chart - there can be a big difference in how a 36 weeker does vs. a 37 weeker.
  • I measured a few days behind in my dating ultrasound but then when I had my a/s they said he was measuring right on target with my due date.  Have they mentioned again since that original u/s that she's measuring a few days behind?  And PP are right...they won't change your due date unless you were measuring more than a week off.  But you have every right to tell them you don't want to be induced at that point.  You could always shoot for 38 weeks instead of 37 if you are concerned your dates are wrong but feel that she should come out earlier rather than later.

  • It you are only 30 or so weeks now then you have time to seek a second option. I would maybe talk to your actual doctor since I am assuming you have another appointment in two weeks and if you still don't feel comfortable with the explanation then see if anyone knows of another good OB in the area that you could see for a consultation? 37 weeks isn't terrible, DS was born at 36 weeks and was fully developed but feeding and weight gain was a pain in the butt so those extra weeks are good to have unless they feel they will do more harm than good.

  • @Runningmomfam It sounds like this is something that the resident at your apt complex mentioned to you and not your OB. You should ask your OB about thins first, who know, the induction might not even happen. I myself have had several and continuous complication throughout this pregnancy and because of this will have to deliver at 37wks...which my medical guidelines is full term. At first I was worried, but I asked PLENTY :) of questions and did enough research into this to feel comfortable with it. In the end though, YOU have the ultimate choice to deny induction IF your OB is considering it...
  • If your baby is only on the 4%, best thing to do would be to listen to the doctors and deliver early. Baby has a better chance of growing and getting stronger outside rather than inside.
