Pumping Question

I have a couple questions.

1. When you first started pumping, how much did you get?

2. How much are you getting now?

3. How long have you been pumping?

I've been pumping for about 2 weeks and I feel like I'm not getting anymore than I did when I first started.

Re: Pumping Question

  • My situation MAY be alittle different than what you're looking for...my Girls were born at 30 weeks and I started pumping while still in the hospital. SInce they were so early, my milk supply hadn't come in and wasn't even near what it is today.

    1. when I first started pumping and getting more than colestrom I was getting 1.5 oz from each side...so about 3 oz total.

    2. Now I get anywhere from 8-5 oz each side...so total 16-10 oz per pump....thankfully as I have 2 to feed!

    3. I've been pumping for 5 1/2 months...I exclusively pump as my girls had a hard time latching and have feeding issues.

  • Holy crap, thats a lot.  I only get 1 oz (about .5 on each).  and it's been the same for about 2 weeks.  I'm jealous!
  • I'll chime in, though I'm done Bf'ing (but gearing up to start again in a few months if all goes well).

I started pumping when dd was about 2 months. ?I had to go back to work at 3 months, and wanted to give myself a month to figure it out and build up a stash. During the first month I didn't pump on a set schedule and would get anywhere from 1 to 4 oz. per boob. ?Once I went back to work, my schedule was like clock work. ?I got about 3 oz per boob each session, and pumped 3 times during the day - so about 15 - 18 oz at work. ?I also did one session around 11 pm for a while too, cause it hurt my boobs too much if dd had a good night and didn't wake up. ?By 9 months I cut back to two pumping sessions at work, and stopped pumping at 11:00. ?I weaned at 1 year. ?DD easily transitioned to whole milk, and started sleeping much better. ?They year of pumping/BFing was rough sleep-wise. ?But I'm glad I did it that way.

  • my situation is totally irrelevant since i am an EPer. I can tell you however, you will get more in time. keep at it. pump in the AM. and in between the hours of 1am and 5am- prolactin levels are at the highest.

  • My twins were born at 35 weeks. When I started pumping, I was pumping one oz. on each side. I had mastitis around 4 months old for three weeks and it really killed my supply. I don't know if I have fully recovered from that or that I ever will. Prior to mastitis, I was pumping about 10 to 12 oz per session and sometimes up to 16. Now I pump around 8 to 10 oz per session. I have been pumping every four hours for about a month when dd decided to strike and hasn't started back up yet.

You might want to massage while you pump if you haven't already, make sure you;re eating lots of protein and drinking lots of water.

  • I started pumping right after DS was born because I wanted to have a large stash for after I went back to work. When I first started I would get about 1 oz from each side. I now pump 3 times a day while I am work and just recently dropped my middle of the night session. In the middle of the night I would usually get about 8-9 oz total and during the day I usually get about 5 oz total at each session.

You'll get more the more you do it. I also ate oatmeal every morning, not sure if that really helps but I did it anyway.

  • Please don't give up!

I exclusively pump so my situation is different if you are bfing and then pumping too. I use a double pump and pump for about 20 minutes.  When I started, I would get only 2-3 ounces from each side, each time I pumped.  As I continued pumping, I got more and more.  By mid-May, at the end of each day, I averaged 47 ounces.

I have EPing for 8 months now and have decreased to three pumps per day.  I get between 27-32 ounces each day.
