Baby Names

Overheard women talking about my name choice!

I haven't been on the board for about a month, DD was a month old yesterday... but I had to share what happened to me tonight! I coach cheerleading at a high school, and had to go back tonight in order to meet the new parents for next year's team. I took my baby, Ivy Ann, to introduce her to my old cheerleaders and when I went around a corner to change a diaper, I overheard several mom's saying, "Poor little girl, can you believe she did that to her kid, naming her that?!" "With all the cute names out there like Brylee, Neveah, Lexi, or any of the presidential ones, like Carter and Reagan, how in the world did she choose such a blah name?" I finished dressing my daughter, came from around the corner and asked if they could throw away the dirty diaper :)

  • That be dum. Ivy isn't blah at all. Sometimes people seem to judge too harshly every single choice anyone makes.

  • Ivy is blah?  No it is not.  You picked a lovely name.  :)
  • Ivy is lovely, haters gonna hate!
  • While Ivy isn't my personal style, you picked a lovely name. Like a PP said - based on the names the haters were throwing around you should give yourself an award. :) I love it that you came around the corner on them. Were their faces awesome? Lol.

  • Every single name I've picked for my future little human, everyone has been hateful about...so I feel your pain, but Ivy Ann is very cute. Don't stress ;-)

  • @superfreakedfirsttimer

This is why DH & I settle on a name & then announce it. Because we're not looking for opinions.

A friend of mine was thinking of naming her son Colton & her mom ruined it & kept saying "Colon". I thought it was sad because Colton is a perfectly nice name. Now they're back to the drawing board & cannot decide on a name.

I really enjoy these boards, but I think I should have just kept my opinions to myself and discussed everything with my husband instead of asking for strangers opinions..because like I said, names I truely love and MAY actually name my child, I were told were disgusting, horrific, etc.
So....lesson learned lol. Whatever YOU two decide, is what will be perfect for your baby :)

  • LOL.

Ivy Ann is gorgeous!  Congrats on your DD!

Oh..I see. I thought you meant you were announcing them in real life & asking for opinions. But yes, this board will shoot it to you straight. Can I ask what a couple of the names were? You can private message me if you'd rather. :)

Not everyone is going to agree with your name choices. My DS is Jude & people either love it or hate it. Their doesn't seem to be any in between for it. I did ask the BNB for opinions on our DD (that I'm expecting now) middle name. I got some good suggestions & ultimately chose one that we didn't even have on our list.

  • @Skeemer

I don't mind to post them on here. I'm not definite on anything, they are just some names that I, personally, liked. I have a boy name poll with a list of 10 or so names actually, but my top picks were Grayson, Corbin & Hudson. I was CRUCIFIED for Kamden (which I didn't know needed to be spelled with a 'C')...anyway.
    To each his own. :)

  • Lol, someone LOVES me apparently.

  • I can't wait! I'm opinionated too...fun, huh?!
I just try to be polite. No use in berating someone over a name they're considering for their child.

  • Love your DD's name, OP!

Wait, how did this thread turn into you and your names again?

OP, glad you saddled them with the dirty diaper!!

Because I commented on this post with my opinion and @Bromios chimed in about our previous conversation. Also, the OP asked what names I had chose. Thanks for inquiring! :D

Camden wouldn't have gotten love either, just so you know. It would still have been crucifixion time, but with ropes rather than nails.
    ^^
It went like this, and then @superfreakedfirsttimes and I were all like, "Oh, yeah?" "Yeah!" "Yo mamma!" "YO mamma!"
    True. That.

  • @superfreakedfirsttimer

From your list I like Hudson & Corbin the best. Yes, spelling a "C" name with a "K" is a pet peeve of mine also.

Based on the..."name" choices they were throwing around, I would take it as a huge complement.  ;)
Absolutely this.  Especially the quotation marks.  Also, Ivy rocks.
  • Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. Glad you weren't bothered by t.

FWIW, my daughter is Evangeline and people had a negative reaction to her name too. Can't please everyone.

  • I am CERTAIN my friends thought the same thing when I named my DD Caroline Ruth. They love the trendiest names. UGH.

Same.  If I throw Margaret in there, I'm sure a lot of people I know will think it's too old-fashioned.  Even my mother has trendier taste, in my opinion.

Umm, no she didn't. The OP has not spoken to you at all.
  • I think Ivy is a beautiful and classic name. Brylee and all of the popular girls' names right now make me shudder!

    @WashingtonQueen

I'm not exactly sure if you're talking to me, but just a few comments down on the first page, the OP posted the following:

I would be so mad. I would say very loudly and slowly "It's COL-TON." And write it down for her so she can see the difference. If she persisted, I would ask her if it was her intention to make fun of her grandson and that I would hope she wouldn't do that when he is older because he would probably be sad that his grandma makes fun of him.

But I'm a stubborn bitch. Her behavior would only have made me dig in my heels. LOL

  • A-holes.  People just always need something to b*tch about and this time your daughter's name was the target.
