1st Trimester

does this sound like a miscarriage or a vanishing twin?

I am literally crying as I write this..:'(.....Three Mondays ago (March 10th) I found out I was pregnant. DIdn't know how far along I was since I have irregular periods even on birth control. I was on birth control when I got pregnant. Thursday (March 13th) I went home and told my boyfriend. We were both happy. That night I went to use the bathroom and had heavy bleeding, large blood clots and bad cramps! I was sure I had passed our little one...Tuesday (March 18th) I went to the ER cause I couldnt go until then...The doctor did a urine test which came back positive, a pelvic exam which he said my cervix is closed and no blood surrounding it which is good. He took my blood and my hcg was 7214. I was sent to get an ultrasound. They couldnt find anything, so they did an internal ultrasound and they found a gestational sac with a fetal pole measuring 4 weeks. I was sent home with a "threatened miscarriage" and told to make an ob/gyn appt. I went to the ob/gyn on Friday (March 21) and they did crap. Sent to Labcorp for blood tests. Got a call this morning (March 24) saying my hcg levels dropped to 7018...almost 200...but the triage nurse said if I was having a miscarriage it shouldve dropped a thousand or more...another appointment on Thursday...My grandmom said its my generation for twins on my grandfathers side. Could this be a miscarriage completely? Or do you think I had a partial miscarriage and possibly passed a twin? Still have symptoms and no bleeding or cramping anymore!

  • You really need to talk to your doctor, and more bloodwork. Vanishing twins are not like this and at 4 weeks you wouldn't have seen anything

  • This is something only doctors can tell you and unfortunately this early there isn't much a doctor can do aside from answer your questions. At your next appointment they should do some more blood work and be able to tell your for sure what is going on with your numbers.

I hope that everything goes well for you.

  • I went to the er because i called to make my first ob appointment and they said "youd be better off going.to the er"so i went. And the paper work says "there is a small saclike structure in uterus which contains a 5.1 mm corresponding to a less than 5 week gestation which contains a 2 mm fetal pole too small to characterize any further"
  • I don't have any answers for you other than to follow up with your OB for more testing, but I just wanted to say that I'm sorry you're going through this, and I hope that everything turns out okay for you!

  • From my understanding if twins, the only side which can produce heredity for twins is the maternal side as it is wholly dependent on whether you release 1 or 2 eggs during ovulation, and the paternal genes have nothing to do with that. I could be wrong though.

I had a vanishing twin. I didnt even know that I had twins until they saw the one sac had stopped developing in my ultrasound. No miscarriage symptoms at all.
  • I'm sorry you are experiencing this but no one here can tell you.
