Rapid Second Trimester Weight Gain?

Anyone else packing on the pounds like a mad woman? I am actually headed to the doctor tomorrow to make sure all is ok. As I had almost 8-11 gain in this last week.

STM, if you feel comfortable, how much did you gain with your previous pregnancies? I feel like all of those around me gained somewhere btw 30-40 and with the way I am going I feel like I'll be at 50 or 60 easy.

Just want my body to do what it needs for this little guy to be healthy and try not to worry, as I eat very clean (no gluten, not much starch or sugar) and exercise regularly. Just don't feel like I have many friends that are doing all things right and gaining. So I am just discouraged that I am doing something wrong.

Sorry so long!

Re: Rapid Second Trimester Weight Gain?

  • My OB said it was very common to gain the majority of your weight during 2nd tri since most women feel well.  I gained 40 total with DD.  I'm thinking I'll probably gain 30 with this baby but I also started 10lbs heavier than with DD.  I wouldn't worry about it, it sounds like you're eating good things and exercising (both of which I am not).

  • I'm not a STM but I have gained pretty quick. 7lbs in two and a half weeks. Definitely freaked me out! I was at doctor on Monday and she said nothing about weight gain so I'm going to assume everything is okay and will hope it doesn't keep up at this pace.
  • With my first I gained 45 pounds. This time around I have gained 13 at 26 weeks. Most of it was at about 20-24 weeks. I would talk to your doctor/midwife and make sure you are drinking tons of water to help avoid water retention!

  • My OB said she sees the most weight gain from 20-28 weeks. Maybe you are just going through a growth spurt?
    hi

  • I've gained 9 pounds this month :( which puts my total weight gain at 18 pounds... I'm really hoping this pattern doesn't continue. :(
  • I had a mini freak out when I weighed myself yesterday. DH had to snap me back into pregnant reality. But with DS I gained 45 (and lost it all in a month so don't worry too hard) and with this one I have gained 15 so far (technically if you don't count the 12lbs I lost my first trimester) at almost 25 weeks.. And I had a spike in weight gain since my last appt, hence the freak out. The scale is not your friend, leave it alone till LO arrives--you'll stress about it less.

With DD I had a month where I gained like 13 pounds and then the next month only a couple.  I gained 45 pounds total and a majority was during 2nd tri and then the last week or so, but I also developed pre-e at the very end so I think that is why I had a rapid weight gain at 39 weeks.  I wouldn't worry to much about a few weeks in a row of excessive weight gain (unless your doc is concerned), it will most likely even out over time.

Eta: My midwife was not concerned about my weight gain at all at any point.

  • I wouldn't worry too much but as you get later into your 3rd huge jumps in a short time can be a concern if you're retaining lots of fluid.  It could be early signs of pre-e.  No harm in letting your OB know but I know I would go a month with no gain then gain a bunch the next month.  It wasn't a smooth and steady process.  I gained about 40 with DD.

  • Yes. I only gained 10 in the first 20 weeks (with DS I had already gained 12 after the first Tri) but I the last two have jumped up dramatically. Trying not to panic, as I started out 20 pounds heavier this time (having to do with stress and not exercising, NOT baby weight). I'm just trying to cut down on snacking and sweets, and i'm putting together a walking schedule for myself to get moving. Can't go crazy... it is what it is at this point - i want this baby to be healthy!

  • You are doing a good job, mama!  Like everyone else said...try not to stress.  It sounds like your choices and activities are very healthy for you and baby. :)

  • I was gaining about 2-4 lbs a month. But this past 4 weeks I gained 14 lbs!!!
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • With DS, I had only gained 10 lbs for the first few months.  When it was all said and done, I was a total of 60 lbs heavier.  I was shocked, but my OB was not concerned.  I honestly have no idea how much I've gained so far this pregnancy.  I don't want to see it (stresses me out) and my OB says he'll let me know if I'm gaining too much.

  • I agree with everyone else - although only a FTM, I think you shouldn't be worried if you are doing all the right things. I worry a lot because I have not been working out like I should and go back and forth with eating well and crappy. Sounds like you are doing things right, so your body does what it needs to. I would still check with OB but I think you are fine! I have gained way more than I thought I would/wanted to, but hey, I will deal with it later..

  • I agree that this sounds like normal, healthy weight gain. My OB warned me at my 20 week visit to not be surprised/disappointed if in the next 8 weeks I packed on 10 pounds. I was horrified when she mentioned it, but now that I am expanding, I appreciate her warning. Just keep doing what you're doing in terms of trying to make wise food choices and exercising regularly.

  • I had my 24 week appointment this week, had gained 20 pounds even. I asked her about it and she wasn't concerned. She said as long as you are eating well and trying to stay active she doesn't even focus on weight gain. Made me feel much better because I saw the suggestion of 25-35 pounds of weight gain and got nervous because that's not that far away!

  • I think this is so highly variable. I felt like I gained a lot in the last month and said so to my ob at my last appt; he pointed out that while it may sound like a lot for one month, I had other months where I hardly gained anything.

When I was pregnant with DS I gained almost precisely 30lbs, but I think I got more exercise then since I had more free time. I started this pregnancy maybe 5 lbs heavier than the last and would be happy to end at the same weight or at a 30 lb gain. I went a week late with DS and may not go that long this time so that will be a factor, as well as what we are all dying to find out come July which is how big this baby will turn out since DS was gigantic.

  • Same thing happened to me last time, although I did gain 10-12lbs in the last week of my pregnancy with DD.  For a total gain, I 50 pounds.  Three weeks PP I was 12 lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight and I had to put in some work to get the rest off.

  • Gained 50-55 with DS1
    Gained 40-45 with DS2

I'm 22 weeks and have gained 25lbs. Seems I'm on the path to 50+ again. Ain't worried. It will fall off. Yours will too!

  • I gained between 50-60 - I only know my natural weight and my birth weight. I didn't look at the scale during pregnancy, so I have no idea what I weighed at during my first appointment or at my bfp.

I had an insane amount of water weight gain. By this point last pregnancy, my wedding rings hadn't fit for almost two months and my feet swelled from a 5.5 to a size 7.

I'm not retaining as much water this pregnancy, but I think I'm on course (again, I don't look at scales) to put on another 40-45lbs this pregnancy.

  • I've gained more this second trimester, but honestly I have been eating like crap, so I feel like I don't have that much room to talk. My "need" for pizza and French fries just can't seem to be stopped. :/

  • I gained a lot of weight this tri. But I've gone up a total of 25lbs since pre-preg. Though my doctor's is only counting 20lb of it because I had "gained" 5lbs (water weight and clothes) on my first weigh in.

I've slowed down considerably though. I think I've only gained a pound or two in the last few weeks.

With DD I gained 70lbs, and with DS I gained 25lbs (but was still 35lbs overweight from DD's pregnancy as I got KU 3.5 months after the birth). After the DS pregnancy I lost 55lbs. This pregnancy I'm 22lbs up after 26 weeks and my OB was having a shitty morning last week because he's insisting I see a dietician this month. Wah.

  • With my daughter, I gained 20 lbs total and she was born exactly at 40 weeks.
At 24 weeks this time around, I'm up 9 or 10 pounds.
Everyone is different. Eat healthy and stay active. Whatever you gain, so be it! Your body knows what it needs to do

I gained 7lbs total with DD.

So far with this babe I've put back on the weight I lost with hyperemesis plus 4 lbs.

If I have any advice to you it's to stop looking at the scale and tell your OB that you are not monitoring your weight gain and that it is his/her job to tell you if you have not gained enough or are gaining too little. Honestly, there is so much to stress about during pregnancy don't let something trivial like weight add to it. As long as your doc isn't concerned then you shouldn't be.

FWIW, I don't look at scales like ghost, but once in awhile I will ask my OB where my weight is. I trust her to tell me if she's concerned.

    edit: clarity

  • I gained 35'lbs with DD. Most of it was in the 2nd tri. I'm pretty much tracking the same this time. Very little weight gain in 1st tri, but 1 lb-2 lbs a week so far in the 2nd.
I think weight gain for everyone is different. A lot of ppl retain a lot of water and weight gain is there (I think this is the type of weight that 'falls off'). I did not have any weight that fell off. I lost the 6lbs of baby weight, and another 20 of placenta, blood, water, amniotic, and fat. The remaining 10lbs of fat weight that I put on took forever to come off.
But I am hypothyroid and it's very difficult for me to lose weight if I put it on.
I wouldn't worry about it. Worry about it after baby, and you may find it comes off easily.

  • Last time I gained about 25lbs, all but 5 of them in 2nd tri. I don't know what I'm at right now, but I do know that I started about 10lbs lighter this time. I will say that part of the reason I gained less in 3rd tri last time was because it was summer and I was much more active because of the weather.

  • I would go to the doctor too.  With that amount in one week I would be concerned about GD, water retention, or something else. Have you been able to go to the bathroom?  It might be nothing, but better safe than sorry. Good luck and let us know what they say. Hopefully little one has just been especially hungry this week:)

  • Per my OB, we're going through a growth spurt so it's expected to gain a bit in the 2nd trimester.  It sounds like you're doing everything you're supposed to. Your body is going to gain what it needs to. Try not to stress too much.

  • I gained 19 lbs with DS.  With this pregnancy, I had only gained 2 lbs at 20 weeks.  At my 24 week appointment, I found out I gained 6 lbs in the last 4 weeks.  I'm not concerned.  Part of the reason I gained only 19lbs with DS, is because I had GD, which put me on a strict diet.

I will be on that diet again, shortly.  I just found out I failed my 1 hour GTT yesterday, so I will go ahead and start my prot/carb ratio counting.

  • I have definitely gained weigh quickly in the second trimester. When I went to my 19 week appointment my Dr. was all over me about gaining weight because I started out underweight and hadn't gained any at that point. I went for my 23 week appointment today and have gained 10 lb's in 4 weeks...woops but I guess I'm not in trouble any more.

  • ****Update******

First thank's y'all for your encouragement and sharing your stories, it has helped me relax a bit.

Appointment was fine, she didn't scold me, but she wasn't overly supportive either. I've gained almost 28pds at 26 weeks (17 of that in the last 8 weeks) When the recommended for me total was 25-30. So I was worried. So we did some checking that my bp, urine and other labs were fine. Which all came back clean/normal. So I guess, there was nothing to say except just do what you can to eat well and move. (which I feel like I am doing hitting yoga, barre or the gym 4-6 days a week and eating clean)

I just wish she would have said, girl relax, your body will do what it will do to make a baby and that might be 35 or it might be 50 to who knows how many pounds, cause women are all different. For me it's not even as much the concern getting fat or about needing to loose it later, I just have some work events that I want to be best physically as I can be at weeks 36, 37 (long wedding days on my feet 10-13 hours a day). So this is why the weight has been more scary to me, just because I want to do whatever I can to be the best physically I can be for my work (and not be carrying an extra 10pds if I can do anything about it..if that makes sense) But obviously I am on board with whatever this baby needs to grow, it's just so hard to hear recommended weight gain numbers and then blow past them even before tri 3.

I want to enjoy this pregnancy and not be worried that if I eat a handful of candy once every 4 days that I will be making myself gain a million pounds and suffer more at the end of my pregnancy.

So, here's to hoping my big gains were from weeks 19-26 and now it will all slow down :) to 1 lb a week.

Sorry for the novel! Thanks for being so supportive and listening to my worries!! Super grateful for y'all!
