what gift for one year old?

Going to a birthday party tonight and don't know what to get. A couple things:

*party is for son of a loose acquaintance from church
*said acquaintance has outright offered to surrogate
*birthday boy is 5th child
*acquaintance may or may not have major health issues (can't gain weight don't know why)
*acquaintance had rough 5th pregnancy - early term delivery
*she's very nice
*she's not that bright
*she's very religious
*I know she'd do it in a heartbeat, but I just don't feel like she's the right choice
*she posted that she had a cigarette because she had to one recently. Not comfortable with that in context of carrying future babies for me.
*not even sure I can or will surrogate yet. Money, yo.
*speaking of money, recently my favorite gift to close family friends is a gift certificate for zoo membership
*we are not close but she's offered something amazing
*I know she already has a family membership to the zoo
*the gift certificate can be used anytime
*regarding my hesitation about her lifestyle choices in regards to carrying a future child for me, beggars can't be choosers...

What should I bring as a gift to her one year old?

Re: what gift for one year old?

  • I would just get the normal gift for the kiddo. If surrogacy is something you are able to pursue in the future and you go with this lady as a surrogate, that's when I would give a gift for that.

  • At 1 its hard to say...being number 5 I am guessing there are a lot of hand me downs...but I would see a zoo membership kind of things as more for the whole family instead of the birthday boy.
  • Month membership to a play place, maybe? I am currently at one and appreciating the idea more and more

  • A zoo membership would be more of a family Christmas gift
  • I'd say just a small toy. Being #5, said kid probably has nothing that is his own?

I know Amanda has almost no toys that are hers - most are hand me downs and she's only #2. But then again I'm frugal and kind of a big hippie (reduce, reuse, recycle and all that).

It's always nice for her to get something that Marnie has no claim on.

  • I say definitely get the kid a toy of some kind. Something that comes in a box, that way if the toy is a bust, at least he's got a box to play with! ;)

I wouldn't factor any the whole surrogate thing into the gift, especially since it's the boy's birthday.
