Low weight gain

Hi ladies, I am mostly a lurker but am hoping you may have some suggestions. At 10 months DD is 17 pounds, she has only gained about 1.5 pounds in the last four months and has dropped off her growth curve. She is breast fed (wants to nurse all night long as I suspect she is hungry). She is very picky about solid foods, hates purees and over the course of three meals a day eats maybe a couple tablespoons of soft finger foods. Also has broken out in hives to eggs and dairy (allergy testing in 1 month). We saw the doctor today and the doctor wants us to add in some formula and continue working really hard with solids. Any suggestions or experience? High calorie foods with no eggs or dairy?

Re: Low weight gain

  • DS is 17lb 10oz (5th% down from 70th).  Our pedi is not concerned because DS is walking and he grew in height.  Is your LO mobile?  How does her height growth curve look?  Avocado and olive oil are good high calorie options. Try adding a tablespoon of oil to veggies, bread or pasta.

Thanks for your responses. To answer your questions, she is mobile. Not walking yet but very close. Cruising and crawling everywhere and very busy. She is also a very happy and content baby. So I was wondering whether or not adding formula is necessary and I don't want to take away from her breast milk consumption. But on the other hand, her height growth curve has dropped off slightly and she is really eating very little.
  • I was going to say avacado also. Maybe some sweet potatoes.
  • Nugget was just under 17# at her 9 month appointment and the doctor wasn't worried.  I'd second avocado.  Nug love hummus and make all her veggies with butter.  No dairy is difficult  Would she eat pasta?  Do they make a soy yogurt?  Greek yogurt is something else she likes.

  • My LO is 17.5 lbs, but he has followed his curve. If your LO has dropped off her curve I would follow your docs advice.

I agree with PPs on avacado and olive oil.

  • Soy yogurt is a good idea, they do sell this.

  • My DS was 17lbs 9oz at his 9 month appt. He is only in the 6th %tile for weight. But he is following his curve. I am small and was never even in the chart as a child. Hubby is skinny. We are just chalking it up to genetics. I am fortifying his formula and was previously fortifying my brestmilk to help try to gain. He has just remained steady in weight gain. We aren't worried. Someone has to be at the bottom of the curve - every baby can't be 50% in the middle. He's healthy and happy!! :)
