Gestational diabetes

I'm a FTM and of course what I was fearing the most was getting gestational diabetes! I've heard many different things about how it can affect the baby and yourself. I guess after meeting with my doctor yesterday it didn't seem so bad figure of portion control and what foods to eat and what not to. The only crappy thing is checking my sugars 4X A day! Sigh. 9 more weeks of this!

Re: Gestational diabetes

  • I'm a FTM and didn't even think twice about having GD--I never considered it a possibility. But then they diagnosed me with it and they had me checking my sugars 4x/day. I ended up having to push a few appointments back and when I finally went in again a month later, my doc told me I was misdiagnosed and I didn't have to check my sugars anymore.

I'm still checking them because I want to make sure I'm keeping my sugars level for my baby's sake. It's interesting, if nothing else. And pricking your finger, getting a read takes all of five seconds so it's not that big of a deal. GL keeping your sugars on track!! Nine weeks will fly by :)

  • Once you get in a routine with it, it's really not too bad. Good luck. I hope the next 9 weeks fly by for you!

  • I totally plan on buying all my favorite Easter candy when they go on sale, and then freezing them until DS comes out! There's going to be days where you have no clue why your number is high, but it happens to all of us. Yogurt, sandwhich crackers, sugar free pudding are all my fave go to snacks during this time. You'll get the hang of it, good luck!

  • I have zero risk factors so it wasn't on my radar either. But here I am. I don't have GD, I have impaired fasting glucose, but I still have to check my #s 4 times a day and follow the diet. I think the diet would be ok except I can't even seem to follow it without my blood sugar spiking. Even though I only have "impaired fasting glucose" I keep getting some pretty high numbers after meals, even when I've eaten less carbs than I was supposed to, and tons of protein to balance them out. It's getting very frustrating. I can't even seem to eat things like sugar free pudding with dinner (which BTW is amazing!) without my 1 hr numbers spiking. But all in all, I do like the fact that I'm eating higher quality food & smaller portions, and my heartburn has gone away.

  • It's really easy once you figure out what foods you can have and portion sizes and also what foods can spike your sugar.

If you manage to keep your sugars under control, they might bump you down to twice a day testing.

If you have questions along the way, feel free to ask, there are a lot of women on here who can help.

  • Thanks for the support ladies! Day 3 tomorrow. So far my sugars have been under control today. What gets me through is yogurt with granola yum! But I may have to go with buying my easter candy and freezing. I walked by the candy aisle at Target and it took every ounce of me to not grab a bag of some Cadbury Eggs! :( good luck to all you moms to be or already mommies! :)
  • This is my second go around with GD. I agree with PPs that it gets easier. Sometimes the hardest part is the frustrations + hormones. I knew this was coming due to my history and still had myself a little pity party :-)

    Hang in there!!
