SS- Would this be weird?

So when it comes to baby names, would it be acceptable to name my baby the same as my dog? I have a 7 year old Yorkie who I got when I was still in college. He and I have been a package deal ever since then. I've bought two houses with him, had him longer than my job (career), my husband (stbxh) and he has been a rock in my life for a very long time. I know he won't be around forever, so in some ways I kinda want to honor him if I have a boy. (team green) And I was doing baby name research tonight and saw that his name (Toby) means "God is good" which just blows my mind that I named him that without knowing, given all we've been through together. So thoughts?

  • I think it's weird to do if the dog is still alive.
Yeah I think so too.  It is a neat story and pets are family members too, so I can kinda see wanting to honor him.  I like @pantherRN suggestion of using it in the MN?

  • I like the middle name idea too, if you're going to use it for anything! Also wanted to say that your dog is adoooorable. :)

  • I say only if you use a version of it as a middle name not THE name.

  • Eh. I would do it as a mn if you were set on it. I definitely wouldn't do it as the dog is still living.

  • Def agree with pp. It would work for the middle name. If you named DS Toby, think of how confusing that would be for the both of them for the remainder of time that the dog is alive.

  • You could rename your dog!! Lol JK

  • I think that the MN is a good suggestion. A dog that is like family and has been with you that long deserves some recognition! Lol
  • I couldn't bring myself to call a name and have both my dog and child responding at the same time.. or maybe that would make things much easier...

Anyway, my cousin gave his son the middle name of their fave dog.  I don't remember whether he had died before the 2nd cousin was born or not, but it was around the same time... Either way, the kid (now 18+) knows where his middle name came from and jokes about how he has the winning "strange name" with being named after a dog.  :)
  • A nod to Toby with a similar middle name, or as a middle name straight up as it is.  It would be weird as a first name.

  • Yeah...Tobias as a middle or nothing.

  • I agree on maybe a version of it? I felt similar when I thought we might have a girl, I considered Penelope for a hot second but my dogs name is Penny. And shes the only Penny for me.

  • I had this same dilemma with my dog Kiera. I love the name but can't seem to bring myself to naming a daughter after my beloved dog.

  • Too weird. One of my favorite girl names is Jessa. But, when I was 12, the first service dog I trained was named Jessa. Anyone who knew me from 12-25 (when she passed away) would think/know I was naming a kid "after" my dog. So I can't. I just can't.
  • One of our cats is named Tesla. Mister really likes the name Tesla for a baby. The cat is still alive, and I told him it was a no go.

  • I would use Tobias as a middle name.  But I don't like the name Toby as the only name to begin with for a person as it sounds juvenile on an adult.  I love it as a nickname.

  • When people name someone after a dog I always think of Indiana Jones…

LMAO Me too.  Or a friend of mine who named her son a very popular dogs name here in AK.  It drives me up the wall because it is very uncommon as a kids name.

  • As most PPs said, it's weird if the dog is still living to name your child the same first name, but perhaps using it as a second name would be nice.

Maybe I missed something earlier, but stbxh?  So sorry to hear that.  How are you doing with everything that's going on?  How's baby doing lately?

ETA:  Sorry, I'm a doofus.  I totally remember all the stuff with your AH, just mixed you up with someone else temporarily.  Derp.  Anyway, your dog is adorable!  I'd say you could use it as a middle name, but as a first name would be a little odd.

  • Not if the dog was alive.
IF I was REALLY in love with the name I'd consider a very close version of it, though...but I"m weird;)

  • We're having a boy and really love the name Brady, but our dog (who is our first "baby" together) is named Brody.  As much as we love Brady, we decided it would just be too weird to have a Brady and a Brody in the house together and are going to name our son Kyler instead.
