March 2014 Moms

speaking of tearing...

Super infrequent poster but I read the board daily...an earlier post got me wondering.
For those of you who tore or didn't tear - did your nurses/ob/midwife massage your perineum or apply hot/wet compresses at all (or name something else they did) and do you feel like it helped prevent/lessen your tearing?
Curious for us end of monthers!

They did massage nearly the whole time I was pushing (45 mins). In the end I think her head was just too big for me to get out - 14.5 in.

ETA: I ended up with natural tearing, needed muscle repair and a midline episiotomy.

  • No massage, was threatened with episiotomy and got her out with the next push. Pretty significant 2nd degree tear. Didn't feel it at all though, or the stitches and I had a ridiculously easy recovery (tear wise)

  • Very small baby- not sure if she massaged ( I don't think so though) second degree tear.
  • Mine did massage and poured olive oil all over me but baby came so fast that I had a 3rd degree tear. They rather me tear naturally than episiotomy. Took about 30 minutes to sew me up. My mom said it looked good once stitched. Almost 4 weeks pp and still haven't looked

  • First: no anything, 4th degree thru rectum, over a year recovery
Second: 2nd degree and another small tear, recovery has been a breeze in comparison. I dont known if they did a massage but "Zac" was brought in specifically to protect my perinuim while the doc delivered. Guess he did his job. Lol.

  • I didn't have any tearing, my nurse was amazing and definitely helped stretch me out while I was pushing, plus I laboured down for a good 30 minutes which helps prevent tearing (but labouring down is the hardest thing I did during labour).

  • 1st really small baby (2lbs 11oz) no massage, tiny skid mark tear with no stitches needed.

2nd delivery, twins quite a bit bigger (4lbs 7oz and 5lbs 4oz) with a sunny-side-up position for B. No massage, 2nd degree and bilateral labial tears, which took a wile to stitch up - mostly because I was PPHing and that took priority.

  • Mw massaged but I ended up needing forceps so 3rd degree tear over here... Ouch. But 6 days out my stitches are already dissolved and swelling is minimal.

  • My nurse did massage and I had 3rd degree tearing. My dr said I have a very short perineum though...
  • My nurse massaged like crazy. Still had episiotomy and 3rd degree tear to my sphincter. I had a large baby though.

Ftm. 2nd degree (natural/no episiotomy) tear. Yes massage and warm compress. 15-20 mins pushing 13" head. Yeesh.
  • FTM. Nurse massaged me once or twice. No tearing.
  • They did massage and my doctor said she pushes back a little bit while I'm pushing at first to sort of stretch everything? Not sure how exactly that works but I had second degree tear with no episiotomy. I have no idea how many stitches though.

I had a MW and had an in hospital water birth. She was almost completely hands off. She checked for complete dilation and placed her fingers to show me where to push, but no support or massage. I hada small first degree tear, no stitches.

    ETA: I'm a FTM btw
  • No massage that I know of. First time 2nd degree tear (7lb 11oz baby) and second time 1st degree tear (6lb 6oz baby).

  • Episiotomy first two times, third time no cut and no tearing. I really have no idea whether my MW did any massaging but I'm shocked that baby made her way out without disturbing the tissue and really questioning whether the prior two episiotomies were necessary (all of my kids were about the same size -- within 3 ounces of each other).

  • No massage or stretching. 2nd degree tearing. Recovery has not been too bad.
  • FTM. I had massage and a 1st degree tear with 2 stitches. Also a peri-urethral tear which was way worse. It burned so badly when I peed I was reluctant to do so. I pushed for less than 30 min and I had a 7 lb 11oz baby.

  • No massage. Episiotomy with some natural tearing. No idea what degree (didn't tell and I didn't want to know!) Took just a couple minutes to stitch me up.

Recovery was very easy- a little tender for a couple days, but I felt WAY better than I thought I would after pushing out a baby!

DD 1 - no massage, small labial cut that needed a "precautionary" stitch or two. DS - my midwives used warm compresses and I think lube of some sort as he was crowning, no tears and he was 9lb, 5oz and posterior. DD 2 - no massage, no time for it! She pretty much came out in one push with no tearing. The doctors were very impressed :)

  • Massaged with both my deliveries. First baby had small internal tear. I think I got 3 stitches. This baby same internal tear but only needed 1 stitch.
  • 5 vaginal deliveries, two docs three midwives, no tears  why?  Yes they all massaged during delivery but honestly for me it's the size of the baby and size of me/ plus speed of pushing stage.  My babies were: 5lb9oz up to 7lb 6oz

I believe your body is going to do what it is going to do regardless of preparation- based on babies I think your body is going to do what your body is going to do based on your structure and the babies size regardless of massage... just my opinion

  • FTM. No massage. 2nd degree tear and episiotomy. Lots of stitches but at 5 weeks PP, all has healed up nicely.
  • No massage or anything. 3rd degree tear and episiotomy. :-(

  • No massage with either baby.

First birth: total time- 8 hours with an epidural. Two internal 2nd degree tears and an episiotomy. Awful recovery and a prolapsed bladder at 5 weeks pp.

2nd birth: total time: 1 hour and 57 minutes med-free due to fast labor/delivery. One second degree external perineal tear. Super easy recovery.
  • DD1 - no massage, 2nd degree tear
DS2 - no massage, no tearing
