Kegels

I just felt like sharing.... We took a birthing class last week at our hospital, taught by a doula and former nurse educator. It was a fantastic class, but the ONE THING that DH remembers from the class is levels. She said 10 kegels, 10x a day. So now I get text and phone reminders all day long: " are you doing kegels?" "How many did you do today?". It makes me laugh because at least he is taking an interest in me and my health, but if he keeps it up much longer I'm going to go nuts!

Re: Kegels

  • Well that is one way to remind yourself to do them.  At least it shows he was paying attention!!

  • That's too funny! And kinda sweet in a somewhat creepy way :)

Not sure how that's creepy. Sweet maybe but I wouldn't call it creepy since they're married and having a baby.

  • Can he add me to his text reminders because I never do them. 1- I hate them and 2- I just don't ever think about it.
  • That seems like a lot. I don't remember where I read it but I read 3 sets of 10 per day. I barely remember to do that much so 10 x 10 will never happen over here! More power to you.

  • I do them at times, probably more than I would otherwise because he is nagging at me so I think of them so much! I have started doing them in the car, the line at the grocery store, when I'm waiting around for things... I don't really count though so I don't think I do any where near that many!

  • According to my Bradley Method class, at this point I should be doing like 240 Kegels each day + relaxation practice + squats + over 100 pelvic rocks. LOLZ. This never happens.

I can't even manage to put my pants on right now to go grocery shopping. Bradley can suck it.

Our teacher has stopped asking me and my husband if we've been doing the exercises and reading that we're supposed to be doing. She's caught on after 7 weeks of "no" in a row.

  • At my birthing class, as well as other forms of research I've done, Kegals aren't the be-all and end-all of prepping for labour. I mean, it's good to do them and all, but a lot more of your body needs to be prepped than just your pelvic floor muscles.

The doula that teaches my birthing class said if you remember to do them, great, but doing squats, pelvic tilts and wall stands are going to be more beneficial than kegals at this point. (And if you do yoga, child's pose is a great prep for labour too, which is wonderful, because doing that pose is relaxing and definitely not as hard as wall stands).

You should get your husband to do prep exercises with you, since he can do everything else except the kegals ... then see if he's all up-on-you with reminders for THAT stuff.

  • @RachelCA29‌ you have a good point. I just looked up keels for men... Figured they should be able to do them too- they have the same muscles we do, just slightly different configurations. https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/mens-health/in-depth/kegel-exercises-for-men/art-20045074. DH is getting legal reminders from me now too!

Have him do kegels, too. My husband said it feels like he's sucking his balls up into his body and the way it makes him squirm is really funny.

  • The minute I read the title on this thread I started doing them. I think it may be worthwhile to actually set an alarm on my phone every 2-3 hours to remind myself to do them.
