ftm looking for advice

Im 12+6 with our first, I feel like in gaining weight and getting big a little to quick. Ten pounds so far and out if my pant with out an extender in. Doc had changed my due date twice now. I haven't really changed my eating habits, im just curious if this is normal or not. I live 3000 miles away from all my old friends and don't know who to ask. Thanks!

Re: ftm looking for advice

  • What's normal for one mom is not normal for the other. Seriously, I stressed about it a lot with my first ( and still do with my third!) that I was gaining too much. If you ask 10 different moms what their weight gain is you'll get 10 different answers. What I always focused on is if my doctor was concerned (they never were.) I also try and make good decisions and stay active. But I'm still up more than what's recommended at my weeks. My body is just going to do what it wants to do!

  • I agree with the pp. All bodies are different and going to react different ways. Talk to your doc if you are concerned and listen to what they advise.

  • With my first pregnancy, I had all day nausea the whole time. In the first trimester alone I gained over 10lbs. I though how can this happen?! But it was because I was eating a sleeve of saltines a day, guzzling ginger ale, and eating kfc mashed potato bowls. Plus whatever bland carb sounded ok. In that pregnancy, I gained 65lbs. I'm not saying that will happen to you, or my situation is the same as yours.
Some women gain a lot early on and then it levels out later. Some gain nothing in the beginning but it catches up with them. As long as your doctor isn't concerned, just continue making healthy choices. If you're worried, try tracking your calories to see how much you're consuming.
If you were underweight to begin with, it's probably ok anyway.

  • Thanks, I do but some time I worry. I weighed 216 a year ago and managed to lose 70lbs before getting pregnant. Gestational diabetes runs in the family, and I have talked to the doc about that. Thanks everyone, sometimes you just need to hear itfrom soson who has been through it.
  • So my story on this

Baby1- I craved carbs like no other. I gained 50 pounds. It came off fairly easy

Baby2- I mainly craved protein and gained 27, came off easy

Baby3- I am at 11.5 weeks and gained nothing.

All 3 I started at basically the same weigth. Every pregnancy is different. My doctor never said a word about my weight any time. If you are concerned talk to your doctor.

    Eat healthy and avoid sugar.
  • I gained 50 both times which was excessive since I'm an average weight. My doctors were never concerned because my habits were not that bad. Again just to point out that you probably should not worry too much just keep in touch with your dr. :)

  • I'm mostly curious about the due date changes? Your doc isn't changing dates based off your weight gain, right?

Anyway, every mom gains differently. Don't stress right now, it may even out.

  • Every pregnancy is different. I gained 13 of 27 in the first tri with DS. I gained 2 during the first tri this time. My eating habits are not significantly different- I am exercising more, but not 11 lbs worth. If you have concerns, certainly talk to your doctor.

  • No, changed during ultrasound. One for abnormal bleeding and today was nt testing
  • I agree every body is different I hear some women never gain until the very end others gain all throughout. Keep up on your fiber so that you don't carry around extra bloat because that will move the scale up a few pounds.
I'm 195 pounds and haven't gained any but I hear the more you weigh the less your suppose to gain don't know how true that is. Stay active and keep snack healthy

When I was pg with my first I gained 70 lbs throught my pregnancy. It had a lot to do with what I was eating. I gained the most because I drank a lot of minute maid juices. I ate a lot of fruit too but I slowed down a lot when I finally noticed. By then I had already gain quite a bit. Fortunately it was easy to lose after I had my DD. So, don't stress too much just be conscious of what foods and drinks you are consuming because something's are high in sugar (like juice!) and you won't even notice it.

  • I gained 10 lbs during first tri with DS and 35 total, then lost it all plus some afterwards. I committed to not let that happen this time and yet I'm 12 lbs up even though I workout everyday. I know I'm eating more to keep ms away but not significantly so I'm shocked at how fast I've put on so much weight. It's hard not to stress about it but I'm just hoping it all evens out in the end like it did before.

  • No worries, I dealt with my mom calling me fat hiding being pregnant. Now that I am she tells me im still to skinny. I weigh 159 at 5'8".Im trying to watch it, and im getting out more with my dog.
  • Ftm here also 12w6 days.. when are you measuring from? I am up 4lbs from my 8w visit and my Dr said I'm doing really well/on a healthy weight track. If I was measuring from LMP I would prob be up 10-11 lbs..

First off, good job losing so much weight!
Second, this is my first pregnancy, so I don't have a previous experience to share other than the last 12 wks.
You might not think you've changed your eating habits that much, but maybe you should keep a food diary to see if any extra calories are sneaking in w/o you realizing it. With how little I was eating the first 12 wks I figured I would lose weight, but tummy settling carbs, juice, and ginger ale can add up fast! Also, make sure you're drinking enough water. You could be retaining some water weight, esp. if you've been indulging in salty foods. Lastly, it may just be your body preparing for the long 9 months ahead. Especially if you lost all that weight fairly recently, you body might think it needs to store extra calories right now.

  • Agree w PPs that although there are set "guidelines" every pregnancy and body is different and killing yourself over some extra lbs is noy going to help anything. If you are being pretty healthy, I really wouldn't stress over it, although know that's easier said than done.
  • I worried about this with my first.  I think I was in maternity pants at 14 weeks.  I gained 60 pounds, but I felt great the entire time, blood pressure was 90 over 60, and I was really active (bowled two games a week before I gave birth, my Dr. was shocked).  I also had a huge baby, and the weight came off by the time he was 4 months old without even trying.  This time around, I'm already in maternity pants, and I'm not even out of the first trimester.  Let it be, love your body, eat real food.

To many games with garlic fries...at least I don't have to worry about beer calories...lol. @nikb13 not as u saying alot, when. I got fat that's what my mom thought. Im watching what im doing and trying to be better about it. Thanks everyone.
