In-home daycare/babysitter

Does anyone use an in-home daycare or babysitter? I think @lizabethann06‌ has mentioned it before. A little background: I was supposed to go back to work in January but we decided to extend my leave till September. Originally MIL was going to watch DD 4 days a week and my mom (begrudgingly) agreed to one day. Then DH decided he doesn't really trust his mom, plus starting this month she's also watching SIL's new baby. Also I work a half hour to 45 minutes from our house, so I'd be leaving like at 6:30 to drive DD a half hour to MIL's or my mom's then continuing to drive another 20 mins to work. So now we're looking into daycare options for September and this highly recommended daycare center near our house where 2 friends work just seems like wayyyyy more than we can afford. Another option is the mother of DH's assistant coach who has a "daycare" in her home. She cares for 2-3 kids at a time with the help of her husband, and lots of other teachers at DH's school have used her. DH would be the one dropping her off and picking her up, so it would be better for me. And it's cheaper. So how does j13 feel about babysitters/in home daycares?

@mermomo5‌ pretty sure she's unlicensed, but since she's DH's assistant coach's mom I might feel ok about it, and also because so many of DH's coworkers have used her. Currently a teacher from the middle school has her watching her daughter and DH said I can call her to see how she likes it.

  • We do. Its my best friend's mom and she is like Maggie's third GMa.

Before we settled on her, we looked into Care.com, but the people who seemed the best and who we were most interested in, already has work.

  • We use  neighbor who has 2 kids of her own.  She watches my kid for 450/mo.  It works for us, she's not a licensed daycare she's a sitter, but I've been in her house and it is baby proofed and my kids love it there.

  • LO's in a home daycare. We absolutely love it and adore our sitter. She has LO and a 19 month old girl full-time. And then she has a 16 month old boy part-time that comes in a couple of days for a few hours. Her max is just the 3 kids.

This is actually our 2nd home daycare since I've returned to work. Our original sitter moved out of state about 2 weeks ago. We loved her as well and were so distraught when she told us about the relocation. We found current sitter not too long after and LO's been with her now for 3 weeks. They adore each other.

Both home daycares were unlicensed. We toured both houses to make sure they were up to our standards (basic baby proofing, clean, both stimulating and safe environment, etc.). We also requested 3 or more references. And most importantly, we made sure LO took to the sitters well.
  • We use a licensed in home daycare. She has a total of 6 kids, but only two infants. Sully and our friend's LO are the two infants. She has 2 preschool aged girls and two toddlers. She is awesome with all the kids, and they all love her.

If you tour her home and feel comfortable with her then I say go for it. :)

That is so great, @Carrie3102‌ and @chiboo9‌. Hearing about your positive experiences is really helpful. I kind of like the idea of a lower caregiver/baby ratio that this situation could provide. If only it were $450 a month, Carrie3102!!! She charges $10/hr, which will work out to about $250 less than the pricey daycare. If we can get my mom to agree to 1 day a week that will help, too, but the daycare centers around here will only allow full time. Edited for typo

I wanted to do in-home dc, but dh wasn't comfortable with it because we aren't connected in the community. If we had benefit of word of mouth from people we trusted, if love to do it. Where do you live again? $10/hour when someone is watching other children seems high. We paid $12/hour for a sitter to come to our house. Our dc is mid-range and costs $290/week. For us, center care becomes more affordable at 2.5 days/week.
Hah, I was thinking $10/hour sounded great and cheap. Damn you, New York City.

Yup, @gulickr‌ and @NKaeding‌, it's a pretty good rate! Sad that it is. We're about a half hour north of NYC, @casey78‌.

We use a nanny, so it's slightly different, but I'd have no problem with a properly vetted in-home daycare.

    Same.
