Contraceptive options after delivery

Hey ladies :) hope your "hump" days is going good so far!

Any of you guys considering getting your tubes tied after you deliver your LO? The hubby and I are considering getting mine tied while they're in there doing the C-section anyway, but I'm freaking out a little. I had mentioned to my OB I was thinking about having it done, but never gave him a definitive answer. Well while registering for my C-section today I noticed that he went ahead and scheduled for my tubes to be tied anyways. So my real question is, do any of you know the side effects of getting them tied?

So I'll preface this by saying I have no idea how common this is, and is 100% anecdotal, but one of the risks is a future tubal pregnancy, which happened to my mom after hers were tied. She nearly bled out internally because she didn't realize what the pain was and didn't husstle to a doctor. Having seen that happen to her, even if this were to end in c-sec, I wouldn't do it. DH will have a vasectomy, it's an out-patient procedure with a very short list of potential complications.

ETA: absolutely have a talk with your OB about it at your next appt, but I assume that's a given.

I'm getting my tubes tied during my c-section. I have read that periods can become more intense with respect to cramping and bleeding, but I asked my doctor and he said he's never heard of that. I will be taking birth control anyhow for my skin and mood, and for period severity, so I'm not going to worry about it too much. This is my fourth child and I've tried almost every other method and had undesirable side effects. Since I'm certain I don't want to have more children this seems like the best option for me.

Edit: phone ate my last sentence.

  • Once we're done having kids (probably after the next one), I'm going to ask DH to get a vasectomy. After being the one responsible for birth control, the horrible side effects I get from it, and being pregnant/going through childbirth--I think it's only fair. My periods are heavy enough, I don't need heavier ones after getting my tubes tied ;)
  • I will prob go back on the pill. This is our first and we don't know if we will have other children but I hope that hubby gets fixed once we have another or decide one is enough.
  • I will be having mine tied as well but DH is scheduled for a vasectomy too. Since I will be loosing and ovary they are going to do everything.

  • I will be putting Mirena back in as soon as the doctor lets me.. I loved having it before and will be getting it again. But we're not done having kids so I can't speak to getting my tubes tied.

  • I can't wait to put my Mirena back in. I loved it. Never had a single period or any weird hormonal issues.

  • This is my second pregnancy and HR both times, and this will be a RSC. DH and I have decided that 2 is the magic number for us and we do not want to try to go through another HR pregnancy so I will be getting my tubes tied during the c-section and just to be doubly sure DH will also be getting a vasectomy!

The flip side for those with DH's getting a vasectomy that is not 100% fail proof either. The chances are small but you could still get pregnant...this just happened to my sister. Her and her DH had their 3rd baby a little over a year ago and he then had a vasectomy that did not completely work and they are now pregnant with number 4! There are plusses and minuses to all options I guess!
  • DH is getting a vasectomy. Easier recovery, less invasive procedure, no hormones etc... Woohoo!
