For moms with "petite" babies

Hi guys,

I feel like everywhere I look people have ginormous babies and my little girl is teeny comparatively. At her 4 month check up today she weighed 12 pounds. The doctor isn't super concerned although she has dropped a little in her percentiles due to a couple stomach viruses. She's also SO active that I think she's burning many of the calories I give her. She gets breastmilk with a teaspoon of formula to boost calories (per the pedi). There's no real point to this post, besides hopefully getting some solidarity from other moms whose kids aren't tipping the scales and in 6 month clothes yet. I realize there is a huge range of normal but I wouldn't mind seeing a few extra rolls on Evelyn :) Have a good day!

I'm right with you. Hannah was 11lbs 8oz at her 4 month the other day. She also dropped a percentile but not drastically. I EBF and the doctor isn't concerned or suggesting any supplementation (tbh, I probably wouldn't do it anyways). But she is gaining every week so I know she is just on her own time line. We are nowhere near outgrowing our 3 month clothes and I am also anxiously awaiting more chubs :)

  • Lauren was 11 pounds 10 ounces fully dressed and ready to poop (pooped a couple hours later for the first time in 4 days) last weekend at 12 weeks. Composted to all her "friends, " she's tiny! Just saw one this morning who is 15 pounds at 2 months!

  • My LO is 10th percentile (12 pounds at 4 months) because he was born early and was low birth weight. Still, he has a long torso so we have to put him in 6 month clothes. He has a few rolls but he doesn't look like the michelin baby.

His pedi is happy with his weight gain though, he was under 5 pounds at birth so he has really been packing on the pounds.

For the first month or so we spiked his breastmilk with formula to up the calories like you said, and we used high calorie formula when we supplemented but since about 7 or 8 weeks old we've just given him plain breastmilk and he's still gaining like a champ.

  • Lydia has her 4 month check up next week. I'm anxious to see how much she's grown since her 2 month check up. She's really true to size as far as clothes. She's still in 0-3 month clothes, but is starting to get into some 3-6 month clothes.

  • We were 33% in weight at 4 months, 13 lbs,6 oz. she is short though, still wearing 0-3 clothes, except sleepers.
  • Amelia is a little bitty one. She hasn't quite hit 4 mos yet or had the official weigh in with the pedi but she is just about 11 1/2 lbs and is gaining an average of 4 oz a week which is perfectly average. I have low supply so she gets both bm and formula and I have to really stay on my nursing and feeding schedules to keep supply up so she keeps gaining. As I said in my WTF post it makes me very frustrated when people like my MIL make comments. She didn't bf so she doesn't understand why I keep trying and has told me that on more than one occasion! But anyway my little A is still rocking the 3 month outfits and packing a whole lot of awesome into a tiny package.

  • That's us too! She's not quite 4 months so we haven't had that visit yet but at her 2 month she was exactly 10 lbs, & in the 18th percentile for weight I think. Our pedi wasn't worried thankfully because she IS growing steadily, just at her own rate. Both DH & I are fairly small people (although I'm tall, & LO was in a much higher percentile for height) so I guess it's not too surprising. Plus even though she's just "built" smaller she def has some chunk on her, she has some pretty big leg rolls! So I'd like to see her gain more, but at the same time I'm not too worried.
  • My LO was 5lbs 11oz when she was born (2 days before her due date), so I think she's just petite. She was 9lbs 14oz at her 2 month appt and our dr wasn't concerned. She's recently started getting thigh rolls and really chubby cheeks. Based on our home weighing, she's around 11 1/2 pounds. I think the gaining is more important than the scale reading.
  • My LO is 4 months and only weighs 10lb1oz she eats poops and plays. Don't be to worried
  • LO is 3 mo and about 2 weeks. He's been measuring in the 20-30 percentiles in weight and length. He is hanging out in 0-3 month and 3 month clothes (though he still has one nb sleeper he can fit in barely.)

  • We are 3rd percentile for weight (but have always been) so I get you. I am moving her to 3-6 month clothes bc they are so cute but still have some 0-3 month stuff that is too big. DD is long and lean and is just starting to get some cheeks and thighs coming out of the 3 month GS. We are 4 months next week and I expect her to be in the 11lb range...

  • At our 4 month check up she was 13lbs 6oz and we even went a week and a half late. She's still wearing 0-3 month and 3 month clothes although I may have to move up a size in pjs because she's getting a little bit long.

  • We just went in for a weight check Monday because he is so lean. He weighed 12lb 15oz. His brother was almost 16lb at this age and had rolls for daaayyysss. Gabriel is dropping percentiles. 64% at birth, 34% at 2 months, and 22% at 3 months. Pedi thinks he's ok and won't test him unless he drops to 5%. I track what he eats (FF) and he is getting plenty.
He's tall so I have him in 3-6 month clothes.

  • DD was 9lb12oz at her 2 month and I am taking her back in 2 weeks for a 3 month weight check. She is still in loose fitting 3mo clothes. She is long and skinny. The long part is what made her outgrow nb clothes.

  • Same here. LO's 4 mo check up is next week, so we don't have an "official" weight, but on the baby scale we have at home she's around 10 1/2 lbs. At her 2 mo check up she was a bit under where she needed to be, but those concerns have since been addressed/ resolved. She was nearly a month early, so she still has some catching up to do. But she's gaining every day and has lots of pees/poopies and is hitting all her milestones. I do get tired of the "she's SO tiny!" comments.

My baby girl is small also. Idk the percentile Bc we haven't been to her 4 month check up yet but a few weeks ago she weighed only 10 in a half pounds :( and she is was 3 in a half months then

    Eta. Also she is ebf
  • You definitely arent alone. DD is 4 months next week. I am pretty sure she is hanging out around 11lbs. Still rocking the 0-3 & 3 month clothes. At the 2 month appt our pedi wasnt worried or concerned. I always get the "she is so small comments" but I just say not to me.
Yes! The "she's so small" comments drive me a little crazy. It looks like we're not the only ones with littler little ones though :)

  • Anya was 11lb 7ounces at her 3 month.  That's normal

  • Alex will be 4 months on April 10th. Not sure what she currently weighs, but at her 2 month check she was 9lbs 13oz (she was 7lbs 5oz at birth). She still fits in 3 month clothes and size 1 diapers, but I think we will be moving up in sizes soon.

  • B is consistently in the 17th percentile -- her 4 month check-up is tomorrow so I don't know what her weight gain is (she was 10 lbs. 9 oz. at 2 months, 15 days), but she's definitely still in 3 month clothes that she won't be outgrowing anytime soon.

  • Yup, my guy is long and lean.  I just weighed him this morning and he was just barely over 11lbs and he's 3 months this week.
  • My LO just got into her 3-6 mo clothes and she turned 3 mo over a week ago. She was 10.7lb at 2mo and I think she's around 12-13 now so I think Evelyn is just the right size! I wouldn't worry!

Really? I don't feel like that's super low.
She was 10lb 7 oz at 2 1/2 mo. I've been pumping her full of milk over the past week. According to my unofficial weigh in (weigh myself first, then me with LO) she's up to 11.5lbs. Will find out exact weight at Fridays appt with the LC.

Yea I don't think that's super low either enough to have both a pedi and LC concerned...unless she was 10lbs at birth or something and she wasn't gaining. But it sounds like she is.

  • At LO's 3 month checkup she weighed in at 11 lbs 4 oz and 22.5 inches. I forget exact percentiles, but she's pretty low -- less than 20% for each. I was somewhat concerned, especially since she's never had the 2 lb gain per month that they say is typically average. Our pedi specifically described her as "petite" but assured me that there is nothing to worry about. He said that as long as height and weight is proportional it is fine -- some babies have to be bigger and some have to be smaller (Her head size is huge though, 82% for that!). She is gaining weight each month, just in smaller increments.

She was 8lb5oz at birth, then lost a full pound by her 4 day appt. She has been gaining, just really slowly. She only gained 2 oz in 2 weeks from 3 mo appt to visit with the LC. She looks fine to me, definitely not a super chunky baby, but since pedi & LC were concerned, I am too now.

  • My little man is a peanut. He is 4 months old and he's just starting to outgrow his 0-3 mo clothes. :(
He weighed just under 10 lbs at his two mo check up. He was in the 5th percentile. But the dr wasn't at
all concerned. Actually he was very pleased with the weight he had put on.

His 4 mo check up is next tues. I'm actually very anxious to see what he weighs now.
  • Ben was 10.4 at his 2.mo appointment, which was just 9%ile. He goes next week for his 4 mo check up and I'm really hoping to have gone up some in his weight percentile. In fact, for Easter at 4.5 mo he'll be wearing the outfit his brother wore for Easter when he was like 4.5 weeks!

This was us exactly. We went to the LC two weeks ago and she was only up 5oz to 10lbs 12oz. I was told to take 4 fenugreek 3x a day and I increased my water intake to about 80+ oz a day. When we had our weight check this past Monday she was 11lbs 13oz, up 17oz in 13 days!

I guess my pcos had caused me to have a low supply. I had no idea. Also, now when I pump I get 3+ oz in about 20 minutes. Before I was only getting an ounce after 45 minutes.

@LinnyF I also went on fenugreek, and I also got a prescription for reglan. They have worked WONDERS this week. I have no idea how much LO will gain in a week, but I can tell my supply has gone back up. I read in another thread that to dry up supply, you can take sudafed, and I took some for a few days when I had allergies. I would bet money that killed my supply for a few weeks. :(

Oh, no! I am glad things are turning around with your supply. Good luck with your next weight check! :)
  • LO was <1% at her 3 mo appt weighing in at 8lb 5oz (7lb 4oz @birth). I had to have surgery when she was 2.5 wks old and pumping and dumping pretty much killed my supply and I never was able to come back from that. We just went to EFF and I think she's around 10 lbs now - will be 4 months next week.

  • LO weighed in at 11lb 9oz yesterday at 4.5 months. She's moved from the 5th % at birth to the 10th % now. She is still mainly in 0-3 clothes, but I am finding she is getting too long for the sleepers and some of the onsies. We EBF and the pedi isn't concerned. Just have a petite LO :)
  • My LO is in the 10% and has been since birth.  My pedi told me that because I am small (5'2" and 105), he responded to that while in utero, and his pre-birth environment is still dictating his growth.  It's not until around the first birthday that his genetics will take over - so basically, because I am on the smaller side, he'll stay on the smaller side until he's a little older.  She also said so long as his growth trajectory stays the same - that is, so long as he stays in the tenth percentile, she's happy.  Hope that helps give you some peace of mind.
