MFM vs OB

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question!  I was seeing my OB, and the care I was receiving there for Mono/Di twins wasn't what I needed.  They weren't going to do an u/s, cervical check, amniotic fluid check between 12 and 20 weeks.  So I requested to see an MFM.  When they did that, they completely transferred my care.

The MFM is seeing me every week for cervical length and amniotic fluid checks.  They also, as of now, see me monthly for growth scans.

Is there a reason that I need an OB too?  I see that most of you see both, and now I'm concerned that I needed the OB for something too.

Re: MFM vs OB

  • It really depends on the situation. If your OB completely transferred care, you'll want to make sure your MFM does deliveries and, if so, which hospital he/she has privileges at. Not all MFMs deliver.

I saw both because of mo-dis and my MFM was affiliated with a Level III NICU 90 minutes away vs the local hospital my OB and midwives were based at which is about 15 minutes away. Plan was to deliver at the main hospital if I went before 36 weeks, but if I made it to 36 I could have the babies at either.

  • My ob will do the delivery but that's about it. Some MFMs deliver :)
  • Thank you @kjkarats03 and @Ylvelill!

So it sounds like I'm okay.  My MFM does deliver and their office is inside of the hospital that has the Level III NICU.  That's another reason we switched.

    That's relief!  Thanks, ladies! :)

  • I see both regularly.  My MFM really just looks at babies, cervical length, fluid, etc.  My OB takes care off all the other pregnancy stuff that goes on with me like monitoring my blood pressure and urine, answering pregnancy questions, talking about reflux meds, etc.  My OB will deliver too.

Hmmm...I wonder what the difference is.  Mine does all the OB stuff too.  BP, urine samples, answering pregnancy questions, etc. at every monthly appointment.  Thank goodness!  With as often as they see me, I don't think I could keep up with another doctor!  LOL

I only had both because I was already established with OB, liked her, and wanted to stick with her. She was such a great OB that she acknowledged her limitations and had the MFM group monitor me, too (instead of pulling the "oh I have experience with twins" nonsense).
Yeah, that's what mine said too...even though he wasn't going to monitor for TTTS between 12 and 20 weeks, and he said that he would let me go to 40 weeks.  "yeah, okay, no."
