It is very tragic, I could not believe the number of people missing in a one-square mile area. There have been a few stories of children and animals rescued, but it sounds like there are far more sad stories. Between the mudslide and the missing plane, I have felt very sad for all the people out there with missing loved ones. Hope your family and friends are safe, Jackson.
I hadn't heard about this, but just reading the replies here made me cry and stop and pray for those poor people. Being a parent has made my heart raw - it hurts everytime I hear of/imagine a child/parent suffering/scared.
I used to work in the branch of our Ministry that approves developments, and this is one of our big concerns when considering letting people 'populate' an area.
Also, as an 'on the ground' engineer, I've seen a lot of landslides (and avalanches that bring down big trees, but thankfully no fatal ones). They are scary in their magnitude. You can't imagine the scale until you see it.
It is heartbreaking that this happened. It happened in BC back in 2010 or 2011, but in a much less populated area. It always turns my stomach.
I ordered a bunch of supplies on Amazon to be delivered there. They are working all day and night to find their loved ones. I've cried everyday about this, breaks my heart. An entire neighborhood- gone.
