3rd Trimester

Baby Measuring Small

Hello!! I will be 30 weeks on Saturday. I went to my doc Wednesday and my daughters stomach is measuring at 26 weeks. I have only gained 10 lbs & lost 3lbs in 1 week. My doc is sending me back to my maternal fetal doctor for a 2nd opinion. If he measures same I will have to deliver early. I am a nervous wreck & eating a lot. I get so nauseated. I take zofran, diclegis & zantac. I am so WORRIED. :( She is our miracle baby.

  • @savannah_girl I am just so worried. I have had so many scares & complications. It would kill me if something happened to her.
  • DD's belly measured less than 2nd% at 36w (it had not grown at all since 32w). My OB was concerned about placental blood flow. I started bed rest at 32w for possible pre-e and extra monitoring (twice weekly NST & BPP) with the knowledge that we could be sent to the hospital at any appointment. We induced at 39w4d and she is perfectly healthy, just small. She is now 2 years old and has always been around the 10th%. I know it's hard, but try not to worry.

  • My LO has been consistently measuring small since 20wks and my belly is always at least 2 weeks behind. I've also only put on about 15lbs and i'm 33 weeks on Sunday. Small babies happen. Not every baby is 9 pounder! My last nephew was 5lb 12 full term and was perfectly healthy. I understand how it feels to think you're doing something wrong - especially when people are telling you how small you are all the time. As long as your Dr is monitoring it, you should relax.

(I'm actually a bit grateful for a small baby! I'm none too big myself and a don't think I could push a big one!)

  • My doctor is worried because I have only gained 10 lbs, my blood pressure was a little elevated, & blood in my urine. From last Wednesday to this Wednesday I lost 3 lbs. I also am on lots of medications due to epilepsy and protein s deficiency.I am worried because I have had 2 miscarriages and our DD is our miracle child.
  • It sounds like he's closely monitoring you. To be honest i'd be most concerned about the blood in my pee. Did he address that at all?

I'm so sorry about your previous losses. I'm also PGAL and i know how paranoid it can make you.

I don't think your weight gain really matters too much. I gained 50 pounds with my first and at 37 weeks he was measuring under 3%. They let me go until 42 weeks and he came out 7 pounds 2 oz. I was hysterical though I won't lie after that appointment but ALL you can do is keep them in there as long as they will allow it. You can not change the outcome.

he is still my little guy but I am 5'2 100 pounds so he has reason to be that way I guess. He is 3.5 and just barely over 3 feet and 29 pounds

My second baby I only gained 27 pounds and he came out at 39 weeks and was 7 even.

My first was all his measurements though and not just belly.

edit: some medications alone can cause a lower birth weight. Just hang in there and do the best you can. My sister (who is epileptic) had a baby measuring small and they took her out early at 34 weeks. She was 4 pounds 6 oz. She is a very healthy 9 year old now!
  • To echo PPs, wait until you hear from the MFM.
DD was IUGR and was delivered at 36 weeks. She's still just a little thing at 3 years old. She was below the 3rd percentile. Her IUGR was found before the third tri. Growth scans are not as accurate in the third tri.

This LO is measuring small again and I have twice a week BPPs with an anticipated early delivery again.

They will probably just increase your monitoring and deliver a couple weeks early until baby fails the additional testing (usually BPPs and/or NSTs).

  • In regards to the blood in the urine they thinkI may have a uti or some type of iinfection. I am trying to stay positive like my DH it's just hard because I feel like he doesn't understand how emotional it makes me. Thank you everyone I am feeling a little more convinced that everything will be okay based off others experience.
  • DD was born at 38 weeks, 3rd percentile.

She's happy, healthy and meeting all milestones.  She's always been tiny, but maintained her growth curve and at her last appt. increased it a little to 9th%.

We didn't have a U/S late in the pregnancy, so it was a surprise when she was born small.  I think in some ways that made it easier, because what I didn't know about, I couldn't worry about.

Try to take a deep breath.  Hopefully your MFM will have some answers.  **hugs**

  • I have no advice to give other than try an relax. I will keep you both in my prayers.

  • I want to thank everyone for their prayers. I was admitted on Monday the 17th (released 3/20) due to my body trying to pass a kidney stone. I was sent immediately to my mfm due to possible surgery on Tuesday. My D D is measuring more up to date now and I was blessed to not have surgery but still trying to pass stone :)
  • Try not to worry too much.  That will only cause you to lose more weight.  I have measured small and have low weight gain with both of my pregnancies.  I gained 7 total with my first and  she weighed 6.13, healthy as can be.  And I have gained 8 lbs with my second girl (Im 38 weeks) and at 36 she was weighing around 6 lbs.  We did ultrasounds to check everything out because my tummy is only measuring at 33 weeks and because of the weight gain.  My obgyn said he would much rather have a mother like me than to have one gain 35+ lbs.  Don't worry and try to enjoy the fact that you won't have much, if any, to lose after that precious baby gets here.

Do you even know what IUGR is? It has nothing really to do with maternal weight gain. Your comments are insensitive to women who are dealing with IUGR and can make them feel like it is somehow their fault.

Their fault?  I think you read into my post a little too much.  Her situation sounded a lot like mine did with both of my pregnancies.  I was simply telling her exactly what my OBGYN told me and everything ended up fine.  If anything, I was attempting to help this worried mother relax a little before getting all the information needed.
