Babies: 9 - 12 Months

CIO @ almost 12mths

Tonight was night one of CIO. I'm sort of beating myself up about not doing it sooner but better late then never i guess. This wasn't the method I wanted to go with but all else failed and this is my last resort to getting my dd out of my bed and the pack n play that's next to it. My question is can I still nap with her during the day and or let her nap in my bed? Is this going to totally confuse her or will she get it that night time is the crib? I love napping with her on the weekends and during the weekdays she naps on the couch for my nanny. So I'm not really sure how I should approach the napping issue. I can also use a few words of encouragement on the whole issue! Thanks in advance!!

  • I would be consistent.

  • Agree with being consistent. Start a routine. We have a nap routine and a bedtime routine. Having her nap on the couch seems unsafe and if you want her to sleep in her crib that is where she should be for naps and bedtime. The most CIO I did was 2-3 minutes before I went in to him, but you do what you feel is right for you and your baby. Im not wanting to get into the CIO debate. Routine and consistancy is key.

  • Yes I agree with the consistency and we have always had a routine for bedtime but it was our bed not her crib. Gotta work onthe nap time routine though.
  • We let her nap with us, however we are consistent. Bedtime she is in her crib. She actually has never napped in her crib outside of when I was working from home and she was young enough to nap every three hours. Now she's only down to 1-2 a day.

We started CIO at 8/9 months so I don't think it's too late. We let her go for 20 minutes and then checked back in. Now she rarely cries for more than 5 minutes and then, she's actually in a sleeping position while crying.

We did also make a point that bedtime she's also in her own room. It's actually better because in our room we both snore and then we have meowing cats which have woken her up before. In her room we have a sound machine and fan. If you are using a sound machine, you might try switching the sound. We changed ours to rain and it seemed to make a world of difference (when she was born, there was a thunderstorm the next day - might be why).

I believe that will work for us as well. Last night was the first night and she cried for about 20-30 mins and I kept going in every 5 mins or so and she finally passed out. She woke up 2xs though the night and I went in laid her back down gave rubbed her back for a min the. Left the room and both times within 5mins of me leaving the room she passed back out. Today we did nap together and tonight same routine, back in her bed and she cried for maybe 2-3 minutes then laid down and passed out!!!! We are so glad we finally have this under control!!!
  • CIO at nighttime worked well with our LO but not for naps. I tried it several times for naps and DS would just cry the entire nap. So I gave up and continued the practice of nursing to nap. It works well for me and DS. As soon as he is out I put him in his crib and he naps for about 45 min to an hour and a half. Sometimes I take him in my bed if I want to nap with him and don't see anything wrong with that. The main thing for me is that LO knows that when it's nighttime he should be in his crib in his own room.

Agreed! Main concern is that dd knows for sure that her crib and bedroom is where she sleeps at night. We napped together yesterday and today she fell asleep in my arms and I then put her in her crib and she slept for 1 1/2 hrs. Finally we have this under control. We always had a routine going and it was pretty consistent so this just makes it even better! Maybe we can finally start to think about having another baby :)
  • Also, don't get too frustrated if there are setbacks.   When we did the CIO our son did really well for a while then he started waking up again.  We held our ground and after a week or so he fell back into the sleeping all night thing.
I didn't start doing the CIO till he was 10 months.
He would cry for up to 15 minutes, if I would go in and check on him it just made it worse so I would just lay there and watch the clock.   Then after he was quiet for 15 minutes or so I would then sneak in and check on him.
