Swaddling Question

edited March 2014 in January 2014 Moms
How long do you plan to swaddle for? STM's how long did you swaddle for? My LO is 2.5 months and I really feel the swaddling is helping him stay asleep as when he naps in living room during the day unswaddled this startle reflex often wakes him. Just wondering if there is a specific time you should stop or if it's different for every baby. Sometimes he breaks free from swaddle so I am wondering if once he starts rolling over if that wouldn't be safe anymore. Also do you jump straight to a sleep sack or do you start to ween from swaddling by swaddling with arms out?

Re: Swaddling Question

  • We've already stopped, with the exception of occasionally using the halo arms out just because we have it.

We made the jump when he started waking upset from being unable to use his arms and started rolling on his side every night. We went straight to a sleep sack and he adjusted quickly. He rarely flails anymore and when he does wake himself he sticks a hand on his mouth and goes back to sleep. But you could definitely do one arm then two if transitioning slowly works better for you. Some people swaddle until closer to 6 months.

  • LO is 3 months and shows no signs that he would prefer to not be swaddled. I will keep doing it til it doesn't work (or it becomes unsafe, I.e. Rolling)

  • LO is 3 mo old today & we swaddle at night. He wakes too easily otherwise. he doesn't get anything at all at day care during the day. I'll keep doing it until something tells me he might be ready to try an arm out or something.

  • DS still likes being swaddled, but has been really trying to get his fist in his mouth lately. I have started swaddling him with one arm out and he's doing well with it.

  • We swaddle arms out for naps and arms in for night time, and we'll continue to do so until DS2 starts rolling over. It's what we did with DS1 and it worked out well. He wasn't rolling until he was about 4 1/2 months old.

  • Thanks everyone! I think ill stick to swaddling at night until he rolls over or if he starts hating having his arms in, then try the 1 arm out, then 2 before trying the sleep sack. I appreciate everyone's responses!!
  • When he starts rolling, or it becomes more of a hindrance to his sleep.

  • She doesn't sleep swaddled at daycare anymore because they don't like to do that for long. I plan to stop when her teacher says she stops waking herself up with her Moro. I will probably try it gradually (one arm out) though.

  • I stopped swaddling early on because we switch DH from sleeping in a flat bassinet to a RNP. Due to the slight incline I didn't want the swaddle to  pinch at her midsection. She sleeps much better in her RNP though and although I think she liked the swaddle, she spat up way too much to keep her in a flat bassinet. I was terrified she would choke.
