May 2014 Moms

wow, I didn't think this was a real thing..

Apparently this woman was convinced she was pregnant with quints when she really wasn't pregnant at all.
Crazy talk!

  • I was just reading that!  That is crazy to me.  I don't understand how they were saying her belly grew and she was lactating?

I have no idea! I don't understand how the boyfriend didn't figure it out sooner. Did he never wonder why there was no ultrasound, or feeling the babies move, etc?

what i don't understand is how she made it that far without having to provide him scientific evidence (i.e. ultrasound photos, doc visits, etc.)
  • Yeah I read that article this morning. What baffles me is that 1) she just decided there were more babies along the way; and 2) how were there never any doctors appointments/prenatal care?? Doesn't Canada have free healthcare? It's not like she could claim 'no health insurance, so no prenatal care'...

And how dumb is the dude to believe her saying "oh it's twins. just kidding it's quads. actually it's quints" without a single ultrasound pic?

At least they aren't actually having children. That is definitely one set of genes we do not need being spread in the world.

  • According to @spacepotatoes (who I believe is in Ontario), if everything is progressing normally, women don't see their OB until around 30 weeks. Jumping from one baby to five, though...that's not proceeding normally. And how would she even know that she had "whoops, five!" babies in there if she didn't tell him she'd gone to get an ultrasound? Yikes.
  • ultimately, I feel bad for her. I mean she clearly had/has some psychological issues causing her to truly believe she was pregnant. I don't think she was trying to fool anyone because it was so real for her. I feel bad for the boyfriend too but maybe had he begun to ask questions sooner it wouldn't have gotten so out of hand.

  • How do you know if everything is "progressing normally" unless you go in periodically?  Or do you see your normal doctor at some point but just not see the OB until 30wks?

  • The woman in this article is clearly mentally ill.

We do see our GPs up until 3rd trimester so we are still getting prenatal care. Same bloodwork and ultrasounds as everyone else, just requisitioned by a GP instead of an OB. If a complication comes up, we make the switch earlier. So, in theory, this should have been discovered way sooner.

In this case, the couple is in Quebec and they tend to run things a little differently from the rest of Canada so I'm not sure what happened there. Maybe @MusicAtWork can chime in on that one.

  • Is this the woman that posted to one of these boards asking how to fake a positive pregnancy test?

  • I feel so bad for the boyfriend. He seems like such a nice guy and was genuinely excited about becoming a father. I think it's amazing that she gained weight in all the right places and actually looked pregnant.

As for sonograms, besides the fact that she could have "scheduled" them to be at an inconvenient time for him, she could have also just googled sonogram pics and have them printed.

  • I find phantom pregnancies really sad. There's obviously some kind of desperation and unhappiness there that needs addressing.

I had a blighted ovum last year and one of my aunts told the whole family it was a phantom pregnancy. We had to call everyone and explain that it wasn't, which was extra-traumatic. I didn't want my family thinking I was either crazy or vindictive.

I do wonder if she came on TB and asked if she was having twins because her BFP was super dark, then took the sarcastic answers literally.

That is so awful of your aunt! Did she just not understand what actually happened or was she seriously throwing you under the bus? I'm sorry you had to go around explaining yourself to everyone, wow.

I think she misunderstood either what a blighted ovum was or what a phantom pregnancy was. She must have thought they were the same thing. We only found out when another aunt called my dad and mentioned it, so he told her what it actually was. She's a medical receptionist so she said herself that it was an entirely different thing. Thankfully my family were very supportive. They all live 300 miles away, so it was hard to explain over the phone.

The moment I found out I was pregnant, I only scheduled an appointment with my family doc to get a referral for an OB, who I have been seeing ever since. In QC you are followed by an OB throughout your entire pregnancy. From what I read in the Journal de Montreal, she pretended to work at the hospital and always arranged to go to her appointments/ultrasounds alone, however he did say that he accompanied her to the hospital on occasion and even saw her being injected with something!!

Another Quebecer here chiming in: in my case I was followed by my family doctor until 32 weeks, at which point I switched to an OB. As PP have said, same bloodwork, tests, US. I could have gone with an OB right away, but in my case since my pregnancy has been low risk/progressed normally, it was more convenient to see my family doctor until now.

Also, this story is mind boggling. I can't wrap my head around it.

I think this is a sad case of mental illness that needs to be treated, and maybe following a recovery a family could be an option... I wouldn't say that this is a case of "genes we don't want being spread"
You're right. I jumped to conclusions. I also find it to be a sad instance of mental illness, and I do honestly hope she is getting the care/treatment she needs.  It sounds like the S/O was excited to have children, but just mind boggling that he never found anything suspect about the situation.

  • This story truly breaks my heart. From what (admittedly little) I have read on these situations is that normally the woman wants so badly to be pregnant (often following the loss of a child) that her body starts to believe she is and goes through all of the proper changes. It breaks my heart that they were clearly excited about becoming parents and it's really sad that her bf is leaving her over it. It truly is a mental illness not just some crazy vindictive bitch trying to trap him. I would even go as far as to classify this in the same category as a true miscarriage as far as the hurt they both must be feeling.

Oh man, and she's posed as a cancer patient? This is really sad :/ I'm glad she is in a psychiatric ward, it sounds like that's where she needs to be right now.

  • This is similar to a woman on a fb group I am a part of. It's a really small group and everyone became really close. Some woman even went as far as to buying her gifts for her twins that she supposedly had at 27 weeks. The administrators caught on by finding ultrasound pictures she shared with us and then pictures if some random twins she stole from someone. I mean shame on us for not catching on and we should have expected that from some stranger from the Internet that you have never met. But someone from the group spoke to her church and apparently she had done that several times and even stolen money from her church. We couldn't help but just feel bad for her

    It's a BOY

Oh wow, yeah, she really needs help. That is sad.

I do feel bad that her partner is leaving her but I also don't blame him. Even though her actions weren't necessarily vindictive or malicious, she's betrayed his trust in a huge way. In his position, I'm not sure I'd be able to come back from something like that and be able to trust her completely again.

  • Anyone watch dr Phil? I've seen quite a few women on there that faked a pregnancy. Some were phantom pregnancies but some just made it up and stayed with the lie but didn't have symptoms and just faked it. I find it really sad. There were times in my first tri where I didn't feel pregnant and sometimes thought I made it up haha
