Pneumonia/Breathing Treatment Question

So DD has been sick for about 8 days. After a nice round of throwing up after breakfast, thank goodness it was on grandma and not me...I called the doctor and took her in. She has pneumonia. We got our take home breathing machine for treatments every 4 hours and antibiotics. I was just wondering for the LO's that had pneumonia how long you had to do the breathing treatments for? The doctor didn't say and I didn't have to schedule a check up appointment. Thanks!

Re: Pneumonia/Breathing Treatment Question

  • Poor baby! I hope she's feeling better soon. How many vials did you get? Often times the doctor will prescribe the quantity they want given. I'm kind of surprised the doctor didn't want a follow up appointment.

  • I don't know why they wouldn't write on the script how many times a day X how many days. As a nurse, this baffles me. Also weird he doesn't want a f/u.

    This was my thought too.

  • Poor thing! I hope she is better soon! We used albuteral with a nebulizer last year - the dr said to use it as needed when Jeffrey had a bad cold.
  • They said to give it to her every 4 hrs but if she is sleeping I don't have to wake her up. The box has 30 vials in it but they also gave me 1 refill. I was thinking it would last as long as the antibiotics do.
I was going to call and ask today if it was okay for us to go to our kindermusik class, not sure how contagious it is...so I guess I will ask if we need to schedule a follow up appointment.

  • My ds gets regular breathing treatments and then we use a dual neb when he is sick. The doctor tells us to do it as long as he's symptomatic so no set amount of days. Sorry your dd is sick:( poor thing.
  • When DD has RSV, we do the nebulizer breathing treatment 3 times a day for the first few.  When she shows improvement, we drop to twice a day for a few days.  Once she stops coughing, we quit.  We usually face it for 6-7 days.
