Update - Need help with daycare/bm explanation! My mind is blank!

Ok so I am working full time and pumping bm while at work dr Sophia to drink while at daycare. Today, daycare messaged me that she was out of milk by 12:30!! I'm super stressed, super sick, trying to work, and can't think of how to explain to her how the breastmilk feedings work.

So here's the specifics:

I do a full feeding at 6:00 am.
I drop her off at 7:00 am with 4 3oz bottles for the day (12 oz total)
She is there until 3:30 pm. (8 1/2 hours total)
Daycare says she's going through 1 1/2 bottles each feeding!

Ugh...I'm at a total loss at how to explain it and what suggestions to give them.

Help would be much appreciated!!!

Update - ok so after freaking out yesterday, I decided to make the bottle s 4oz and have them feed her every 3 hours. I sent her with 4 bottles in hopes that she's really only need three of them. It seemed to work out just perfect! She was completely content with the amount and spacing and she did only go through 3 of them.

I am so grateful to all that responded! It reallyhelped put my mind at ease!

unfortunately there is a tendency for caregivers to overfeed breastfed babies. however, if they're saying she's drinking 4 1/2 ounces at each feeding, that's not out of the realm of possibility. how old is your LO? maybe she would prefer 3 bottles?

do they feel like she is hungry for another feed after the one she has at 12:30? if she knows your are coming, she may be waiting for you to get there and nurse her rather than have another bottle.

Here's info at Kellymom- How to bottle feed the breastfed baby (there is even a PDF printout for caregivers)

  • p.s. also, are you using a low/slow flow nipple on the bottles?
  • Thanks so much for the feedback. DD is almost 12 weeks and this is her 6th week at daycare. Until Friday, she was doing fine and taking in 3 or 4 of the 3 oz bottles. We do use a slow flow nipple.

The questions you gave are great! And I plan on getting to the bottom of this.
  • I'm not so concerned about the bottles being 4-4.5 oz....but 12 oz in 5 hours right after a full nursing sessions just seems like A LOT!
  • I just want to make sure it's because she needs it and that they aren't just giving it to her to pacify her.
  • Thanks ladies! Update above....
  • I had a freak out similar to this shortly after going back to work, and it WASN'T that my care provider was overfeeding.  I don't know if it was a growth spurt or that he just missed me and was soothing himself by feeding a lot but he when through an insane amount of milk one day!  I was so upset, feeling like I could not possibly keep up.  Turns out it was a very temporary thing, and he calmed down and went back to his normal consumption within a few days.  Now, some days he eats a lot, some days he doesn't.  We do baby-led feeding / hunger cues, so he's not on a strict schedule but I try to leave upwards of 20 oz each day b/c I work long hours.
