TMI... I NEED To Poop!

The morning sickness was unbearable... so I finally gave in and started taking Zofran.
It was great for the first 2 or 3 days...but now I am sick because I need to go the bathroom.  I am afraid to take a stool softener or anything...don't want to be in the bathroom all night?  Just ate an apple... what else can I do?

  • Prunes can help also.
You can also call your doctor to see what the recommended.
Hope you get some relief soon. :D

This is me exactly! I haven't been able to go in several days and I have taken a stool softener and eaten fruit. I'm sure my doctor will have some words about my weight tomorrow lol.

  • Take Colace !!! Eat pears dried plums and apricots . Also I started taking fiber gummies everyday . It's a struggle for me but all of that helps
  • Drink tons of extra water, too, especially if you take a stool softener or a fiber supplement. Stool softeners give me a little kidney pain.

  • I do 2 tbsp milk of magnesia every 2-3 days. I take it before bed and usually go sometime the next day! Hope you get some releif soo,n!!
  • Miralax is pretty gentle and effective. I'd ask your doctor if you can use that to relieve your constipation, then get on a colace regimen. :)

Constipation is not something to play around with...I became severely constipated by accident when KU with DS (ran out of colace and wasn't drinking enough), ended up having to use an enema and go to the doctor. It was awful. :P

  • I wasn't able to go for a couple days so I gave in and used colace, which was approved by my OB. It worked great, and I wasn't stuck in the bathroom.

You don't need meds, just drink a small glass of prune juice. The relief it gives is worth the yucky taste.

ETA - drink the juice in the evening.

  • I've been putting chia seed on everything and it has really helped with that and bloating.
  • Apples will not work. They are binding. Zofran can be extremely constipsting. I would take colace twice daily and if that doesn't so the trick move to Miralax. Last resort is an enema. I took zofran and I'm convinced it made me a thousand times worse bc of constipation.
  • Colace works ok, but definitely up your fiber intake.  I take 2 tblsp of Benefiber every day.  Just make sure you drink a lot of water otherwise it will bind you up more.

I take miralax all the time and stool softener. They are both pregnancy safe and nether make you go just easier to go.. There is no rushing to the bathroom.

Colace doesn't really have a laxative effect; just makes going easier. I like kiwis and dried apricots for fiber content. I have dried prunes, but I'm not digging the flavor.
Make sure you take regular Colace and NOT Colace+laxative.  I made that mistake!

When I have that problem, I take 2 Colace at night and the next morning it usually resolves.

I also do the Metamucil. DH bought the pill kind and it says you can take up to 6 a day, so I take 2 at a time and then if that doesn't work take 2 more a while later.
ETA: As PP said, drink tons of water with Metamucil (very dehydrating)

    ALSO: Fiber One bars!!
  • I have been suffering from HORRIBLE constipation from taking Zofran. The only thing that has worked wonders for me is drinking cranberry juice and doing a liquid glycerin suppository by Fleet. I swear it saved my life..haha!

  • How much prune juice are you supposed to drink? I drank a coffee mug full of pj and had horrible diarrhea for the rest of the night (sorry TMI!) did I drink too much? I just can't win :(

  • Haven't tried this yet but when I was at appointment last week this very thing came up and my doc recommended squeezing half a lemon in hot water like you are making hot tea wout the tea and add however much sweetener you need to get it down and chug that down first thing in the morning. Also said hot tea is an option of you can't do the lemon same thing do it as soon as you get up in the a.m. and its supposed to get your system going. Good luck! Know how much that sucks! Hope you get some relief soon.

Usually just a small 4 oz glass of prune juice is enough.  Some people swear that warming it up helps but I think that just sounds yucky.

Colace is always a good one.  You can buy the generic (docusate sodium) for pretty cheap and it usually won't give you diarrhea just helps things move along.

Personally, what has worked for me is taking Benefiber because it doesn't gel and it's tasteless. it goes down well with m/s.  Chia seeds have also worked really well for me in the past.

Milk of Magnesia can also help but I would check with your doctor about it and see what they recommend as far as dosing and frequency as it can often mess with peoples' kidney function if taken too often.

  • 1-2 prunes to make you go (I find the flavor of prunes is less offensive than prune juice although you can use either).  Plus colace if you are concerned it will be too hard.

I eat fruit and whole grains and still was only going 1-2 times a week.  Prunes work like magic for me.
