LO naps more during the day

My LO naps more during the day then at night.  When can I expect her to sleep more at night and less during the day?  She is 9 days old and sleeps two hour stretches at night except when it hits around 3am.  She will then sleep 3-4 hours.  Last night she kept waking herself up every fifteen minutes.  Any and all advice is welcome.

Re: LO naps more during the day

  • No magic answer, they all figure it out at their own pace. It's just gonna suck for awhile. You can try to help her figure it out a little better by establishing a bedtime routine with a bath and a feeding, swaddling her and putting on a white noise machine. These can all help to encourage her to calm down and pass out, at least for a bit. Whatever you do, though, don't try waking her during the day (except maybe for feedings, of course). You just end up with a tired, overstimulated baby, and that's not fun for anyone. Good luck!

  • I definitely agree with PP, try to establish night/day differences. My LO knows once the shades close, lights become dimmer in the house, and the PJs are on, its time to start winding down and going to bed. We do this at about 7pm, and then he wakes up at about 11 or 12 to eat, and after that, I go to bed. He's 8 weeks now, and usually wakes at about 7 or 8 for the day.

It takes a while to get the routine established, and it will vary from day to day, but the key is to start early, and stay as consistent as LO will let you.

  • Thanks.  She does love to be swaddled and we do let her sleep during the day.  We will try the white noise and see how that goes.
  • Pretty soon she'll sort things out since most babies do by three weeks, but you might want to wake her up from day sleeping every couple of hours, then let her sleep as long as she wants at night. I had your problem with DS1, but DS2 had his days and nights sorted by the time he was a week old.

  • Nine days old is still really, really little. I agree with most of what PPs have said.

One thing that helped us is to not allow LO to go longer than 2-3 hours between feedings during the day. Wake her up if you need to. Gradually this will help her get her days and nights figured out.

  • Wake her up during the day every 3 hours to eat. Don't swaddle during the day. Try to get her to have most of her calorie intake during the day.

  • 9 days is super young and they probably are still getting their days and nights mixed up. Like another poster mentioned there is no magic method. Give it time and start a routine. Although, I even found it hard to get into a routine until my little guy was about 2 months- they are still trying to figure things out themselves and can be very unpredictable.

Take a deep breath and in time, before you know it, she will be sleeping more and more. Mine didn't start sleeping for longer chunks at night until about 2 1/2 months.

    Good luck!
