MOTN feeding question

My LO is sleeping great, only waking 1-2x a night. If I feed her both sides at 8 pm and then feed only left side at 3am, am I going to ruin my supply on the right from not pumping? I feel kind of dumb for even asking this question since my LO is older now. I know engorgement may happen, just concerned with that 8 hour rule of STTN/hormone drop/whatever it is.

Re: MOTN feeding question

  • Thanks, @AFwifelife‌! I figured it would be ok, but my friend is struggling to keep her supply up and we basically have the same routine. My LO will be 6 months next week.

  • We are night owls in this house, but our nighttime feeding schedule goes something like this (and has been this way for months):
9:30 - feed from one side
11:30 - feed from other side
    *sleep until sometime between 5 & 7*
feed from 1 side, pump both sides

So basically, side 1 goes 8+ hours. I've had no issues and actually still have a bit of an oversupply as I'm freezing anywhere between 12 and 20 oz/week. Oh, and AF hasn't shown her ugly face, so I'm going to assume to major hormone change.

  • I rarely offer both sides to LO during one feeding, no matter the time of day/night. It's never been an issue. In fact we tend to favor my left breast and feed from it 75% of the time. But the right side still produces plenty with no engorgement issues.

  • My daughter always ate from on side at a time.  Ideally, you'd feed on the side you ended with at the last session.

  • Maybe just switch off which side gets neglected each night? So if L goes 8+ on Tues, let R take one for the team on Weds. FWIW, on the nights when DD sleeps longer stretches, I don't notice any issues with supply, just engorgement if it's a really long time (hahahaha, that rarely happens for us).

I've never had an issue with that. My son is STTN (for now)-- but when he didnt I would just nurse on one side in the MOTN and it wouldn't mess up my supply. I always pumped both sides right before I went to bed though (and I still do) because DS has always gone to bed around 7.

    Edited for grammar.
