Names for grandparents

This might seem silly but I was just curious on if you have your children call your parents or your in-laws the same names as your nieces and nephews call them. My husband and I are having our first child and his older brother already has three and my niece calls his parents meema and pop which I don't really care for. I was wondering if grandchildren from different parents called their grandparents different names or if it's typical to just go with whatever name the oldest grandchild picked for them so it's less confusing. Just a curiosity

Re: Names for grandparents

  • We let the grandparents pick what they wanted to be called.

  • My parents have picked what they want to be called. My mom is Pogo because that's what her grandmother called her when she was born. My dad didn't care and just said to call him Old Man, so that's what we've been calling him. MIL is Grandma because that's what the niece and nephew on that side call her.
  • DS was not the first grandchild on either side and so yes, he calls his grandparents what their "grandparent names" already were. The grandparents actually all picked their own grandparent names when the first grandchildren came along. They may not be what I would have picked but I don't really think it would be my call what someone else chooses to go by. Of course, if a kid makes up their own name or mispronunciation, that's a different story. So, I'd stick to the same names.

  • They had ideas ahead of time but now go by what DS calls them. ILs are papu and gramma and my parents are papa and Donna (my mom's name).

  • My parents are Mommom and Pap.

My husbands parents are Granny and Grandpa. They're divorced and re-married and their spouses will just be addressed by their first names.
  • We let the grandparents decide what they wanted to be called so my mom is nana, and the inlaws are grandpa and grandma, there is also a great grandma on that side who goes by GG.

  • Thanks for asking this question. We are letting the grandparents pick what they want to be called but the problem is, my mom is being a little picky. Lol. She doesn't want to be called grandma or nana or Gigi, or gram... We are at a loss. Hopefully we figure it out soon :)
  • We let our parents pick names.

My parents- Nana and Bompo (my mom was calling him grampo and DD couldn't pronounce it, so bompo it is.)

MIL and SFIL- MeeMaw and Grandpa Jim

FIL and SMIL- PawPaw and Grandma Diane

  • I have a double Grammy issue. Both my mom and my MIL have grandkids that call them Grammy. I think once one kid sets the rule, you kinda just have to go with it. I think for our sitch, we will be having a Grammy B and Grammy D for their first initials.

    Good luck!

  • DS was the first for my parents and they picked their names - Gram and Pap. He was grandchild number 16 for my MIL and she was already Nana so we went with that. FIL passed away a few years ago before DS was born, but he also went as Pap.

  • Both my parents and my IL's are just plain old Grandma & Grandpa to all of my nieces & nephews. When they get old enough to understand the difference I suppose it will be "Grandma last name" and "Grandpa last name" so we can tell them apart when we are speaking about them in conversation. DH has a few of his grandparents left, one grandmother that doesn't speak with the family and a grandfather and step-grandma who I think will just be "Grandpa first name" and "Grandma first name" because that's what people seem to call them now. His other grandfather the kids refer to as "Pappy", but with his health I don't think he will be around long enough for this LO to be able to call him anything. I'm sure all of the generic references will get confusing eventually, but we just get to go with the flow a this point.

  • My niece called my dad kappa kappa and it stuck. DD calls him that too.

DHs grandparents (DDs great grandparents) are Vovo and Avo as well as Abuelita. DD calls them that.

DHs parents are grandma and grandpa. My bm is grandma Lori and my mom is Nana.

She basically called them what everybody else did. (My MIL was "mom" for a long time since that's what we all call her. I made everybody switch to grandma real fast. Hahaha)
  • my mom- Tootsie
    my stepdad- Pop

    my dad-papa
    my stepmom-grams

dh mom- halmoni (korean for grandma she is korean)
dh step-dad- Oji ( Japanese casual for grandpa he is Japanese)

dh dad- peepaw (I hate it but he chose it)
dh step mom- Lola (Filipino for grandma because she is Filipino)

  • DS and my niece call my parents the same thing. I'm honestly not sure what DH's niece and nephew call DH's dad but DS calls him papaw. Growing up my siblings and I called our paternal grandparents something different than our cousins did, it was never a big deal just what we did.

  • When I was growing up there were 11 grandchildren. Me and my sisters called my dads parents grandma and grandpa but to our cousins they were gran and paw. So I don't think it matters. I guess it depends on what the grandparents want to be called and how the child pronounces it. My MIL wanted to be a nawnie but DS calls her Nini. So Nini it is. Lol
