Failed first glucose screening

Just received a message from my doctors office that they urgently need to speak to me about my glucose test results but it's after hours and no one is there to take my call. Plus my pharmacy just called and said my Dr has called in a prescription for a glucose meter and test strips already...I thought that if you didn't pass the first screening that it meant you need to do the longer test so I'm confused as to why my Dr would have me get a meter and test strips already. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Idk my test was a 2 hour screen and I failed the 2nd hour... So I have to learn how to test my blood 4 times a day on Thursday. I can't stop crying im so upset about this. I hope you get answers you need!! Its no fun having to deal with this.

I'm guessing this thread isn't going to end well for you. I'd try lurking a little before posting questions. We have daily appointment threads (link above) where you can post these types of questions. I haven't experienced it, but it seems odd. I'd call the after hours number your doctor's office must have. The way I understood it, if you fail by a certain margin there is no need to do the 3 hour test.

Maybe your levels were so high they want treatment right away and don't need another test? I just got the call today that I failed my one hour test but it wasn't by too much so I am getting the 3 hour done asap to see if I have GD. Can you leave a message for the after hours nurse on call? If they said it was urgent she might be able to give you guidance.

I would definitely try the after hours line/on call person. Anything with the word "urgent" I think qualifies for that. From what I've heard most people do follow up the one hour test with a 2 or 3 hour test since the one hour test gives so many false positives. But maybe you levels were so high they were alarmed? Either way, I would still push for the 3 hour test if you only took the one hour one, just to be sure.

Your levels must have been so high that your doc didnt want to do the next 3 hour screening..i also didnt pass the 1 hour test but because my levels were just a slight bit off i am scheduled to do a 3 hour test

OP, did you also give a urine sample at the same appointment? If so, a high blood glucose coupled with either protein or glucose in your urine might have triggered that call....

I've heard if your glucose level is over 200, they sometimes don't even do the 3-hour test.

My doctor had me start monitoring just based on risk factors. It was kinda nice because it saved me having to do another 1hr or the 3 hr. They looked and saw all my fasting numbers were high and could tell that I had GD that way.

I skipped my one hour and just did the 3 hour. I do have gestational diabetes and will tell you I cried when I found out. After my little pity party I read all I could on gestational diabetes and learned it was nothing I did that caused it and it can be controlled. There are items that I love and can't have but there are still lots of foods that I can enjoy. I test my blood 4 times a day, fasting, and one hour after each meal. My first growth scan showed my LO had an enlarged liver which can be caused by GD but controlling my levels will help with that. Just follow your doctors orders and read all you can. I have a book on tons of meals for diabetics so you don't eat the same thing daily. If you have any questions or just want to vent PM me I will gladly share any details with you.

Like PP's said, I would imagine that your levels at the 1 hour were so high, that the numbers at 2 or 3 hours wouldn't matter. Sorry for the GD, but there are lots of great resources and information on how to maintain a healthy diet and keep it under control.
