new part-time job / maternity leave

I'm interviewing for a new job tomorrow-- it's a telecommuting position doing some office admin, communications, and writing projects. (I've been doing freelance writing, but have been applying for a more stable position since before I got pregnant). I'll have to go in about once a week for some on-site duties, but everything else I can do from home.

By the time baby arrives, if I get the job, I'll have been working there for about 4 months. Since it's part-time, I am fully expecting to not get paid maternity leave. I think I'll be able to start doing my at-home work about a month after the baby arrives. (Is that crazy? It would only be a few hours a day...)

Anyway-- I'm wondering how to break the news that I'm pregnant (after/if I get the offer, of course), and how to navigate the leave time for delivery/recovery. Is it unreasonable to hope that I could get some time off, and then start doing my at-home work again fairly soon after baby comes? Does anyone have experience with a similar job situation?

ETA: I'm not showing yet unless I wear something really fitted, so that's not an issue. Would you tell an employer after you receive a job offer, but before you accept? Or after you accept?

  • I, personally, would wait until you have an offer letter in your hand to tell them.  I told my current employer the day I signed my offer letter and they were ok with it.  I, too, am in a part time position and will have been with them for 5 months when I give birth.  I do not get any maternity leave, FMLA does not cover me, but the upside of my situation is it is a daycare and they like me, so far.  However, that being said, we have not discussed my maternity but they do know that I will be working up until the day I go into labor and the second the doctor clears me to come back, I will be back.

  • I am a nanny for a couple girls who are . In school full time. Im planning on taking a couple weeks off and they will be back to school by then so I will just have after school duties at this point. I am hoping that 2 weeks is enough since I will be bringing them back to my house to WFH. I think if you can set your own hours and be at home a month is completely reasonable.
First Baby and a complete surprise.
