VBAC chances 15 mo after DS was born?

Hi there, I am due with DS2 in 7 weeks and have a c-section scheduled. I am starting to consider a VBAC instead and am curious as to others' experiences with a VBAC so soon after a c-section (DS1 will be 15 months at due date). Also, how were recoveries with a VBAC compared to a second c-section? THANKS!

  • First you need to talk to your dr. There are a lot of factors that go into determining your individual chances of success. There will be 16 months between my kids and the dr is confident that if I can go into labor on my own that it will work out. However my first c-section was due to breech baby. If you had to have one due to failure to progress then you're odds to down slightly. I would definitely talk to your dr at your next appointment.

  • I am planning a vbac. My sons will be 20 months apart. Find a vbac friendly doctor. Also, check out Ican and vbac facts.

  • I agree that you'll need to talk to your doctor. Both the OB and midwife I met with this pregnancy wouldn't agree to a VBAC unless there was 24 months between deliveries (I will have 26 months so will try for a VBAC). I know another OB who would do 18 months but 15 seems too soon.

  • I definitely second talking with your OB.
I will be attempting a VBAC after 6.5 years from when DS was born.
VBAC is definitely a personal preference and I don't think it's one that can be decided in a matter of 7 weeks.  It took DH and I MONTHS to decide which was the best route for us.
I would also recommend visiting the VBAC board on TB to ask more specific questions.  The ladies there have been wonderful :)
  • Well. My OB is very supportive and confident in my vbac which is 11 months aftery c/s. I had another OB before I switched to him and he also said it was okay. There isn't much research in the 'less than 18 month' area, that is why most OBs might fret over it. My OB said because of the time frame and a single layer scar, my chances might increase from the typical 1% to 2% chance of rupture. We also have to keep in mind, not all ruptures are catastrophic, those are a bit more rare. I did lots of research before I made my decision.

  • DD will be 14 months at due date, and i did discuss a VBAC with my ob but shetold me there was no way.i had to have an emergency csection last time, due to failure to dilate even with help, she said it would only happen again.i agree with pp check with dr. Maybe you can.good luck,i hope it works out for you.
  • My OB wouldn't let me attempt a VBAC unless there was a minimum of 18M between deliveries.  I know all OBs are different, but that is what my practice required.

OP - I am not agreeing with some of the above posts.  An OB doesn't "let" you have a vbac and I don't think any vbac friendly doctor would flinch a minute at 15 months.  If you want a vbac, that is for you to decide based on weighing the risks versus benefits.  If any OB "required" me to have a c-section and didn't allow me to make that important medical decision for myself, I would be out the door so fast his/her head would spin because that shows a general lack of respect for patient autonomy which is never good in a doctor.  I did go to one who didn't do vbacs and I didn't go back again.  Too many other doctors out there who do follow ACOG recommendations and respect patient autonomy.

Here are the most recent ACOG guidelines:

  • My sons will be 14 months at due date and I have a RCS scheduled, unfortunately.  My first c-section was due to a large baby (10lbs 5oz) and progression on my own.  Looks like this baby is large too and my OB just doesn't think a VBAC is possible.  If for some reason I do go into labor before my RCS, she will allow me to try labor under close monitoring.

  • I had a successful VBAC 20 months after csection.

My first delivery ended in csection after failure to progress and fetal distress after 14 hrs of labor. DS1 was 8lbs 1oz 41 weeks sunny side up.

DS2 was 6lbs 5oz at 36 weeks successful VBAC after 12 hours of labor and 20 min of pushing. I was admitted to the hospital at 6cm then 12 hours later was still 7cm. DR was starting to talk repeat csection, but 2 hours later made it to 10 cm.

My csection was an aweful experience. My epidural started wearing off toward the end of the surgery, and they gave me more meds. I then spent the first few hours with my son vomiting and really out of it. VBAC was a much easier recovery although I did have an episiotomy, and stitches. I was able to visit my son in the NICU shortly after delivery.

I really debated the VBAC I was, and still am extremely nervous that I will try for another vaginal birth and after hours of trying end up with a csection. I have heard from others the a repeat cesection is much easier because you don't waste all that energy in labor before hand. However, I am going to try for another vaginal birth if I go into labor on my own. HTH

I have no basis for comparison, but I can tell you that I never went into labor and my c-section recovery still was horrible. It took be about 9 months before I was even able to work out again without pain and re-injuring my c-section scar.

Edit:  I cannot even fathom the idea of having to go through another recovery with a newborn and a toddler.
