Cloth Diapering

Cloth wipes

Our daughter was born a month ago and we've been CDing from the beginning...it's going great! I'm starting to get interested in cloth wipes because I definitely see the appeal of just tossing them in the pail with all the diapers.  Any suggestions for where to begin? I don't really want to make them.  I've heard others have used cheap baby washcloths...where did you find ones that were cheap but effective? Also, what do people use in their squirt bottles...water, or something else?  Thanks!!

Re: Cloth wipes

  • I use the baby washcloths from Target. I rarely need more than one wipe; I use the diaper to remove as much poop from his skin as possible

  • I hate baby washcloths b/c all the ones we have roll up at the edges. My favorite store-bought wipes are the plain white Grovia wipes.

  • We just use water (or sometimes water with a tiny bit of baby wash). I made most of our wipes. We did get some purchased ones. I like the Thirsties wipes we got, but I hate the Fuzzibunz ones.

  • I actually got started with cloth wipes with the free ones that Nicki's diapers sends sometimes.  I used baby washclothes, but like PP, mine all curled and I HATE them!  Then I ended up making my own.  It really is super easy!

For my wash, I just use water, tea tree oil, and baby wash.  But there are lots of recipes online to add stuff like lavendar, etc.

  • Thanks for asking this question. I've been thinking about this too. My plan was to use cloth ones at home with a homemade solution and then have a small batch of homemade disposable wipes with the same solution while out. Though now that I think about it if I'm already using Cloth Diapers while out I might as well use Cloth wipes while out too and throw them all in the wet bag.

    Sorry, thinking "out loud"

  • I made my own out of flannel I bought from the fabric store.  If I were to suggest store bought, I would suggest 1 ply flannel.  I like the thinness of 1 ply that way I can get in all the crevices.  I don't care for baby washcloths.  I use LuSa baby wipe juice- diluted in water as instructed on the bottle.  I put it in a small spray bottle and spray directly on their bums and then wipe with a dry wipe.

I know a lot of people do this...babies don't mind the shock of cold water on their bums or do you somehow keep it warm?  I haven't tried it, although it sounds the easiest.

  • I like the GMD double-sided wipes.

I pre-moisten them in an OXO wipes container with a squirt of witch hazel, some pre-blended oils and EOs, and pre-boiled water.

It does not bother my girls.  The spray is at room temp.  I have squirted it on my hand to test it out and I have also wiped my hand with a disposable wipe and the sposie wipe felt colder to me.
  • Thanks for all the responses! This definitely gives me a place to start :)
  • I got mine from the Etsy shop Tender Bottoms. She sells 30 1-ply flannel wipes for $10, which is a great price.

I like having both thin ones and thick ones, so I have OsoCozy Flannel Wipes, some cheap baby washcloths (I think I got ours at TJ Maxx or Target) and some fluffy Thirsties ones.

I used to keep them in a wipes warmer when DS was a newborn and pooped a lot because we would go through a warmer-full of wipes everyday.  Now that he only poops twice a day I just keep the solution (water with a couple pumps of CJ's Carcass Cleaner) in a peri bottle and wet them as I need them.

  • I bought mine from the Etsy shop TooshieWipes. They're single ply flannel, 48 of them for $20. More than enough and they work great,
  • I just cut up old tshirts.  Works great and I can just throw them out if they get too ratty because they didn't cost a cent!  I didn't even bother sewing them.   They do curl some, but it really doesn't bother me.
