Eating at daycare

DS barely eats at daycare. We give him breakfast in the morning and they get an a.m. snack, lunch and a p.m. snack at daycare. On Friday his teacher requested that I start bringing him supplemental food.  He eats fine at home and I do not want to start giving him only preferred foods, so I declined to send supplemental food and instead sent a PediaSure shake for them to give along with afternoon snack so that, if he doesn't eat his lunch, he will still get something in his stomach.  I really don't even like doing that.  I thought I was going to get at least one kid who will not be a "problem eater".  I don't know why he won't eat and she doesn't seem to know either.  Maybe he's too distracted?  I don't know.  Any ideas?

Do they sit him in a highchair or at a table at daycare?  I know for Anthony he is at a little table and chairs, so we started sitting him at the small table next to our kitchen table for food and snacks.  They said he is getting really good at sitting at the table and waiting until everyone is finished before getting up.  If he eats fine at home, I would venture to say it has to do with the environment.

They sit at a little table and chairs.  He sits at our dining table in a booster seat at home because if he sits at the little table, he wanders off.  I'll have to ask if they make him stay seated or if he tries to get up and wander around.  That's a good thought.
  • Aw man. Does he right you at home? If it is just a daycare thing, I bet it's environment. So frustrating. I think you are doing the right thing by not sending in favorites.

  • You guys recently switched right? I would also not be sending supplemental food. If he eats fine at home I see the not eating at daycare as a choice. I would ask them to encourage him to eat and drink, but I wouldn't give him other options than what the place is serving. If he's hungry he will eat. And unless he was having weight gain issues I would not worry at all.

  • Honestly.. though its more work.. the food they serve at some centers.. well.. not so great.  COuld you not send just his favorites but maybe a duplicate of what you gave him for dinner the night before?  Food that he eats but not necessarily food he loves.

I am very anti pediasure though - I'm not even sure why - but man I'd do just about anything to avoid it - my girl would drink it over regular food any day of the week I fear.

The food they serve is ok. I'm not a fan of Pediasure either. That's why I didn't make it an option for lunch, just a supplement at snack time when all they serve is crackers anyway. He can still eat the lunch or not. I'm going to see how this works and check into where the kids sit for the meal and how DS acts. It has only been a month, maybe he will fall into a routine and start eating.

If you're not real happy with the snack item, I would test out their theory to see if he will eat what you would give him at home. I bet he won't so it doesn't even matter. But may as well provide a veggie pouch or something healthier than crackers that you know he would eat at home.

We have the opposite problem. Kiddo eats like a champ at daycare (will eat 3 bowls of lunch, then pudding), then when he's at home, he's all fuck this shit.

LOL! T is the same way.

I'm in this club too.  Makes me want to go eat the hot lunch at daycare since it's so much more awesome than my dinners!  ;)

Beebop I hope he starts eating better for ya.  We had to do pediasure with DD just to help her gain weight and I hated it and sometimes she wouldn't drink regular milk because she loved the taste of the pediasure more.  Ugh.  It's always something with these kids!
