Babies: 6 - 9 Months

6 month baby overtired but SSTN

My son is 6 months old and sleeps from 6 pm to 5 or 6:00 am on most night. His sleep is very restless (tends to toss and turn, and move constantly during the night), but he does't usually get up. At 5 to 6 am, he wakes up crying and rarely babbling. After I fed him, he is usually in a good mood for ~ 40 mins and then I need to hold him until his next nap. During the day, he tends to have three naps per day (nap 1: ~ 70 mins, nap 2: 45 mins and nap 3: 20 mins). During the whole day, he seems soo tired, he rubs his eyes constantly, screams very loudly and has all the classic overtired signs. By 3 pm, he is exhausted/cranky/fussy. From what I've been reading a baby his age should be able to tolerate ~ 13 to 14 hrs sleep per day and not seem soo tired. His awake time is ~ 2 to 2.5 hrs. I'm just feeling very unsure about why his sleep is so restless and does not seem like a good quality sleep. He sleeps in his own room in his crib since he's been 2 months. Would appreciate any comments from other mothers.

Re: 6 month baby overtired but SSTN

  • My LO can only tolerate about 1.5 hr wake time between naps. Sleeps 11 hours at night and usually 4 naps during the day. She is 7.5 months. I agree with white noise. We used it when she was younger (4 months) and it worked great. Helped her fall asleep faster and kept her asleep longer. Not sure how long your LO has been like this but maybe growth spurt. My LO does the same thing and fights her sleep through her growth spurts.

  • He does has a white noise machine in his room.

The house temperature is ~ 20 C. He wears a onsie, PJ and sleep sac.

He may be gassy, unsure since he is a fussy baby. I do give him Ovil or gripe water on occ.

    He sleeps on his back.
