Angelcare monitor

So what's the scoop on these movement monitors? If this has already been discussed I didn't find it so feel free to post link for me. I had planned on getting a video monitor and then my mom asked if I was getting one of these movement monitors. I've googled and still just not sure about them. Thanks in advance!

Re: Angelcare monitor

  • I had an Angelcare one picked out, until there was the recall. I ended up choosing a different video monitor with no movement feature.

  • We don't have an angel care but we used a Snuza monitor on DD and loved it. We will absolutely use it again this time.

  • I have the angelcare monitor, used it with DS1 and will be using it this time as well. You put the sensor pad under the crib mattress and it is supposed to sound an alarm if there is no movement detected, but I can't remember the specifics. I was a super paranoid FTM and this really gave me peace of mind. We never really had many false alarms and I really liked the monitor. It did have a recall for a cord issue but you can fix it.

I have the AngelCare and I love it.  I got it because I was paranoid about DS1 not breathing during the night.  When my sister was a baby, she had terrible apnea and we wound up in the ER several times during her infancy.  If they had offered the video one when I was pregnant with my first, I would have gotten that one.  I love that when I wake up during the night, I can just look over at the monitor and see the pendulum swing that tells me that he's still breathing.

Now that he's a toddler, it still has its perks.  He can't be out of bed for more than 30 seconds without the alarm going off.  So we know if he gets up to be extra adventurous during the night.  That lasted all of about 2 days; he's not a fan of the alarm, so he's learned to call to us for permission to get up in the mornings.

In regards to the recall, the strangulations that occurred were the unfortunate result of the cord being left accessible to the babies.  We followed the instructions to the letter on ours; ran the cord straight to the floor, wrapped it around the foot of the crib so that he couldn't pull more slack up even if he could have somehow reached the cord at all, and ran the length behind furniture before it went up to the monitor unit.  They sent us a recall kit, which encases the cord in solid plastic so that it should be nigh on impossible for this to happen again.  Any new monitor sold will include the cord casing.

If you don't go with the video version, I recommend the version sold on Amazon.  It comes with 2 movement sensor pads, which drastically reduces the number of false alarms you get once the baby rolls into a corner of the crib.  Our friend had the 1 pad version from Target and got false alarms all the time; we've never had one with 2 pads under the crib.

  • We have the baby sense one and a separate video monitor. We will be using it again for this baby. The piece of mind is worth every penny.

  • We used a Snuza monitor for the first 6 months when DD was in our room in a RNP. Then we switched to the Angelcare monitor when we moved her to her crib. We have a Summer Infant video monitor, and then just bought the movement only Angelcare. I love it, it was worth every penny for the peace of mind. She is 18 months old and I still use it, because she has no idea it's there, so why not? I agree with PP about the recall, it now includes a cord cover which removes that risk. I personally have 2 good friends that have lost babies to SIDS, one very recently, so I think I am extra paranoid.

  • We didn't have one for DD, but I bought a Snuza for this LO. We also have a Foscam video camera that we love. If you buy a video monitor, don't get the Samsung. That was the first one we got and the sound went out after only 4 months and we were SOL on getting it replaced because the warranty (on a $250 monitor!) was only 3 months. The Foscam is only $109, has a 1 year warranty and all the same featurres plus a few extras.

  • To me, this is a pretty frivilous purchase. We have the cheapest of the cheap audio monitors and that's it. I use it if the kids are asleep upstairs and I am downstairs.
When Shorty was a newborn, she slept next to me in her pack and play. Newborns grunt, gasp, twitch, and squeak alot in their sleep. If she was quiet for too long, the silence would wake me up to check on her. I think mother's intuition goes a long way and all these devices can't make up for instinct. Follow the FDA instructions, don't put anything in the crib, and trust yourself as a good mother.

But to each her own. I'd rather spend the money on a good stroller or something. Or a freaking downpayment on a car, with how expensive that stuff is.

Remember, all you need is blankets, boobs, and something for them to poop in.

  • I ended up getting the sound and movement one from a moms2moms group in my local area that was never used and I paid 40 bucks for it. I was debating on getting one because of the cost but when this came up it was worth it. It seems simple to get the recall kit so I'll be doing that today :) I like the peace of mind it's going to give me when he's sleeping in another room from us

  • We have one, I wanted this type (movement sensor) pretty specifically. Mainly for peace of mind. Looking at baby monitors overall, movement monitors (we did end up getting the Angel Care brand because it was on sale 2 weeks ago) are not that much more expensive than the monitors available today (unless you buy used, which is a good option but nothing was available used in our area).

We thought about a video monitor, but since I'm not planning on staying awake to watch my baby sleep all the time, the peace of mind factor was worth the price of the movement monitor (we did not get a video model).

I think it's one of those "to each their own" things. Some people, knowing their paranoia level (i.e. Me) NEED an item like this to be able to sleep. Others, know they don't need them and save themselves some money (and possible annoyance from false alarms).

  • Another Snuza fan here. I like it because it's so portable. I had maybe 2 false alarms until DS started to get too wiggly. We will be using it again for sure!

  • I didn't even know they made these. Thanks for posting. I registered for a video one and it was $200 and I found one with movement sensor and video for around the same price. I know I'm going to be one of those moms that worries and obsessively checks on baby so hopefully this will help with that.
  • I ordered a one way baby monitor.

  • I'm still using my angel care monitor, it's simple really, keep the dang cord away from the baby my sons we tucked up under the crib hid the monitor out of his reach he didn't need the monitor after 6 months of age, before he started really scooting around his crib to explore, it's just the way people use these things keep cords out of baby's reach they don't get to them, COMMON SENSE. Jeez.

Although I ordered the package to protect, well aware of puttin baby first but still it's a common sense thing just like not using a boppy pillow in their cribs. RecAll kit is on the way.
