NBR Any vegetarians?

I was just wondering if there are any vegetarians on this board? If so, what type of diet do you follow? (vegan, pescaterian, lacto-ovo, etc.) How long? Did your health change in relation to your diet?

  • I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian. When I was eating meat, I ate pretty poor choices like processed sandwich slices. I couldn't be bothered to cook healthily. DH introduced me to vegetarianism and I lost weight and started eating fewer processed foods. Luckily I love tofu and beans.

  • I am lacto-ovo for over 25 years. So it kinda has always been my diet. I am healthy but overweight. I always ate too many carbs and starches. I sub'd those for meat. Now I know that wasn't the way to go. But at 13 that's just what I did and just stuck with it. Now I am balancing better and loosing the weight.
    I am never sick and have very low cholesterol.
    As long as you do it right it's a great way to eat.
    Good luck if you choose to cut out the meat. We are here if you have any more questions.

  • I get fatigued and anemic if I go veggie. I am all about Weston A Price (google fertility diet with that name) and eat farmers market/Amish farm good quality butter meat etc and feel amazing. Some times of the month I eat mostly veggie (seems to be around ovulation and just after) and pre-period I crave meat.
    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.  
    Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
    I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.  
    July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal 
    DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF. 
    Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!) 
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!

    This is always a struggle for me @hooligans4. When I start craving donuts and baguettes, I know that I am deficient in protein!

  • @URMySunshine77 protein is my nemesis. I have been doing good lately so I never really get hungry and I'm keeping my calories down. Upping my protein definitely makes a difference

  • Yes, DH and I are kinda lacto-ovo flexitarians... when in our control (home and restaurants) we eat vegetarian with minimal, but some, dairy, eggs and fish. However, we stay flexible when it comes to circumstances like work, travel and being guests of others where veggie options are not readily available. 
    I cut things out so gradually over the course of 10 years (started in college by cutting out red meat and minimizing dairy) that I didn't really notice any dramatic health differences. But my weight has been stable since college and I have super low blood pressure.

  • Hi, my DH is full vegan, he has lost 26 pounds in 6 months and says he has never felt better. I am vegetarian, but I don't eat dairy, only eggs on occasion for the protein. I feel my health is better. I do use veggie protein powder because I lift weights and Its hard to avoid so many carbs. I am still trying to get my meals down. Its only been about 6 months since we both made the change

    10-04-13 ER 6 eggs, 6 mature, all 6 fertilized. 3 frozen

    waiting for FET
    10-18 started BCP
    10-29 baseline appt scheduled
    11-20 scheduled date of FET #1
    12-2 BFN :(

    3-1-14 moving on to the next step. Switched RE. going to plan 3 IUI cycles while saving for IVF#2

    April 2014- IUI#1  BFN
    May 2014- IUI#2 BFN
    June 2014 IUI#3 BFN

    Taking a break for a while, focusing on our wedding.

    I like how you say flexitarians... I feel like that describes me. I do try to stay strict on no red meat, pork and dairy. I will have fish and eggs and some chicken (if I know its hormone free) on occasion.

  • I love hearing about peoples' journeys into veg eating.

    I had been lacto ovo pescaterian for 8 years. Then, two years ago, my hubby decided to become lacto ovo vegetarian (his own choice), so I cut out seafood. Prior to that he really only ate meat when at other peoples' houses or at restaurants. I would love to continue moving towards vegan but I'm not really ready.

    Originally, I dropped most meat to see how my body would respond. I had a lot of joint aches and pains. They dissipated about a month into the diet change. I was hooked after that.

  • Melissa, do you plan on raising your children vegetarian? We're still TTC #1, but at this point we plan too. I lurk over on some of the parenting boards where that discussion sometimes comes up :)

    You guys are inspiring me!  I was lacto-ovo vegetarian off and on for most of my twenties and early thirties, but have fallen off the wagon big-time.  I'd like to at least start eating less meat--I think I'll see if I can get DH on board...

  • Oh my gosh....no meat? I wouldn't survive :(

    ME:46 MH:44 DE IVF 2014
    Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

    DE IVF #1 (4/26) BFN  DE FET #1 (6/4) BFP! Beta 1=339 Beta 2=852 Beta 3=9957 EDD 2/22/15!!

    My oldest daughter was vegetarian until she was almost 4. My family was not happy about it but I said I would raise her the way I saw fit and when she was old enough to ask to eat meat I would let her. Well we were at my mothers and they were eating hamburgers and she asked what it was then asked if she could have one. I let her but I don't regret keeping the meat away until then. She eats almost all vegetables and is never afraid to try something new.
    Unfortunately I couldn't do the same for my son. He had food allergies so I struggled with food options for him. So he had some meat with mostly fresh vegis.

    My kids are very healthy. Have only had antibiotics twice each and are not picky eaters. Raising A child vegetarian is not hard.

    Yeah, there is no doubt that our kids will get meat at the grandparents' homes, and I can't see us fighting it or trying to make meat out to be something evil but like MelissaMiso said, just teaching them how to make healthy choices for themselves.

    Good for you! I have to say, I am blessed that our families have no issue with our vegetarianism and respect that we are going to raise the kids that way (even though FIL always jokes around about feeding the kids hamburger).
